Problems with VW Golf 2010 Diesel: MIL at fuel tank vent valve

Loss of engine power

Jerking on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Stalling while idling

Hello everyone! I recently started having some problems with my VW Golf 2010 Diesel, it already has 231489 km on the odometer. The MIL lights up, the engine has less power, runs rough, jerks when accelerating and sometimes dies when idling. Now I have a hunch that it might have something to do with the fuel tank vent valve, which helps to bleed the fuel tank. Have any of you had similar experiences? What are your experiences with the garage in relation to this problem? I would appreciate any advice! Thanks in advance!

Hi, you are not alone, I had a similar problem with my VW Golf 2013 Diesel last year. The engine light also came on and the car ran rough. I'm sure it has something to do with the mass air flow sensor. That was the problem with my Golf. When I was at the garage the other day, they replaced the mass air flow sensor and it ran like a dream again!

Hey, thanks for the tip! Maybe you're right. I really hope it's nothing serious. Can you remember roughly how much the replacement cost you? And have you had any other problems with your car since then? Thank you!

Hi, I would rather suspect the fuel tank ventilation valve. Then had something else, a defective activated charcoal filter. The repair on my A3 (2015) cost around €125. But as I said, everything has been running smoothly again since then. Hope that helps you!

Hello folks! Well, I have to say that the considerations regarding the fuel tank ventilation valve could be quite correct. With the number of kilometers that your Golf has on the speedometer, 231489 km, such parts can sometimes fail. It ensures that the pressure in the tank is always in the optimum range to guarantee ideal combustion and keep the fuel injection system functioning properly. The jerky driving and reduced performance could therefore definitely be the result of an insufficiently vented tank. But it should definitely be checked by a specialist workshop! Only they can determine whether the valve is still working properly or whether it may even need replacing. And just as an aside, you should perhaps also check the condition of the fuel filter. That wouldn't be a mistake after so many kilometers anyway. Maybe there is more to do than just solving the problem with the valve. I hope this helps you in some way and good luck with the further diagnosis!

Hello, your information is really helpful. The cost of repairing the fuel tank vent valve seems to be manageable. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your advice and thoughts!

Unstable idle speed

Unstable idle speed can be caused by a variety of issues, such as a dirty throttle body, vacuum leaks, or a faulty idle air control valve. I would suggest starting with the simplest check - cleaning the throttle body. If the problem persists, you may need to check for vacuum leaks or have the idle air control valve inspected. Please keep us updated on your progress. Do you have any other questions?
