Stalling while idling

Hello everyone, I have noticed some strange problems with my VW Amarok Diesel, year of manufacture 2010. When accelerating, there's black smoke from the exhaust, plus the engine warning light comes on. Strangely, the engine sometimes switches itself off, I also feel a loss of power, the engine runs unevenly, jerks when accelerating and my fuel costs have risen. The exhaust also smells quite strong and the car shuts off when it is idling. I suspect it may be the fuel pressure regulator, but I would like to hear your experiences and tips. Who has had symptoms like this before and was able to solve the problem in the workshop? I look forward to your answers and advice. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I'm not really an expert, but I have some experience of similar problems with my 2008 VW Golf Diesel. I had similar symptoms - erratic engine running, smoke from the exhaust, increased fuel costs. It turned out that there was an error entry after changing the fuel filter. My mechanic fixed it for 45 euros. It could be something similar in your case, but it's difficult to make an exact diagnosis without precise information about your vehicle. Perhaps you could give me more details about your vehicle and its use. How many kilometers has it done? Was it mostly used for city or highway driving? Have you recently replaced any parts? This information could help to make a more accurate diagnosis. Hope this helps and good luck in solving your problem!

Hey, sure, I can give you more details. My Amarok has now done 236455 kilometers. It's mainly been used for highway driving, but occasionally for some city and country driving. I changed the spark plugs a while ago and put new tires on it, nothing else special. The last service was also very recent, but nothing abnormal was found. I hope this information can help. Thanks for the answer!

Hey, thanks for the additional information! That's really helpful. With over 236k miles and mostly highway use, you might want to consider a more thorough inspection of the fuel pressure regulator. You say you've already changed the spark plugs, so that's a good step. But as you've already guessed, the symptoms you describe could indicate a problem with the fuel pressure regulator. In my Golf, the problems were only resolved after changing the fuel filter. However, it also happens that the fuel pressure regulator is defective and needs to be replaced. For a precise diagnosis and repair, however, I would recommend seeking professional help from a garage. They can check your car thoroughly and tell you exactly what the problem is. Nonetheless, I hope this helps you and wish you the best of luck in fixing your problem!

Hello, thank you very much for the useful information and advice! That sounds really plausible and I will follow your advice and visit a garage as soon as possible to have a more thorough inspection carried out. I hope that, like you, the problem is just the fuel filter change and not a major fault. Your answer has really helped! I really appreciate your help and time. Thanks again and have a nice day!

The error code P0651 typically indicates an issue with the sensor reference voltage "B" circuit. Start by checking the wiring and connectors related to the sensors in your vehicle for any signs of damage or corrosion. Ensure all connections are secure. If the problem persists, it might be necessary to have a professional diagnose the issue further. Let me know how it goes or if you have any more questions!
