Problems with Toyota Hiace 2012: Black smoke, power loss and EGR function

DPF regeneration failure

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loud hissing on acceleration

Strong exhaust smell

Hey guys, I have a problem with my Toyota Hiace (built in 2012, gasoline engine). It emits black smoke when accelerating, the indicator light comes on, the engine loses power and makes a loud hissing noise. The exhaust also smells strongly and the DPF regeneration won't work either. My first suspicion is that the exhaust gas recirculation is not working properly. Have any of you had similar experiences and can give me some troubleshooting tips? I would be particularly interested in how you solved the problem in the workshop. Looking forward to your advice!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my Toyota ProAce (built in 2010). I have very little experience with cars, so I took the problem to my trusted garage. In my case, the damaged cables on the electric changeover valve were to blame, which cost me 155.0 euros. That could also be your problem. But to be able to help you more precisely, I would need more information about your vehicle. How many kilometers does it have on it? When was the last time you had it serviced? All the best man!

Thanks for your advice! My Hiace already has 299610 kilometers on the clock and the last service was about 10000 kilometers ago. Hopefully it's just a cable or valve problem and nothing more serious. Thanks again!

Hey, no problem, that's what we're here for! At just under 300,000 kilometers, problems like this are not unusual, even if you hope it's only a minor issue. With your last service, you should be in good shape so far. As far as the exhaust gas recirculation is concerned, there may well be something wrong. If it's not working properly, this can lead to the symptoms you're describing. The good thing is that it usually doesn't require major repairs - often it's just a blocked valve or something like that. I would advise you to have it checked at a garage - it's often not so easy to diagnose yourself. Good luck and hope it's nothing major! Let us know what it ends up being. Cheers!
