Problems with Toyota GT86: Engine indicator light and overheating - experience and solutions wanted

Overheating

Check engine light on

Hey guys, my 2017 Toyota GT86 is currently causing trouble. The check engine light is on and it is overheating. My guess is a malfunction of the controlled air flap. Does anyone have any experience with this and can give me tips on how to isolate the problem? Above all, I'd like to know how it went in the workshop and what your experiences were. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2015 Toyota FR-S. As you know, both models are very similar. I'm not a mechanic, but I do have a bit of experience with cars. At my garage, the problem was traced back to a faulty wiring harness for the radiator shutter behind the bumper. The repair ultimately cost me 215.0 euros. It would be helpful if you could provide more detailed information about the malfunction. Have you read out error codes, for example? Then I could help you a little better. Hope that helps! Best regards!

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! Good idea, I should actually have the error codes read out. So far I've just been observing the symptoms and guessing what the problem might be. After your post, I think it could really be a wiring harness or even a faulty sensor... I could also cope with the 215 euros. My last service was at 231802km and I haven't had any problems since then, until now. I'll go to the garage tomorrow and check the situation. I'll get back to you with updates! Thanks again and see you then!

Hey, I'd love to! Exactly, reading out the error codes can really help. In my case, it was more of a surprise that it was the wiring harness. But who knows, maybe it's something completely different in your case. In any case, it's good that you have an overview of the symptoms. And it's good that you can still cope with the 215 euros. Just don't tell anyone the price, otherwise they'll go crazy at the garage, haha! You've covered quite a few kilometers since your last inspection. Something could break. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's nothing serious. Be sure to let us know what you find out, I'm interested in that too. Good luck and see you then!

Hey, thanks for keeping your fingers crossed! I also hope it's nothing serious. But like you said, after so many kilometers it's probably normal for something to give up the ghost here and there. I'll definitely keep the 215 euros to myself, otherwise they'll hand me a hefty bill, haha! I'll keep you up to date and report back as soon as I have any news. Thanks again for the help and see you soon!
