Problems with Toyota GT86 2012: Oil light on, metal shavings in the oil and low engine oil pressure

Metal shavings in oil

Hey guys, I've recently started having a big problem with my 2012 Toyota GT86. I've noticed some abnormalities - the oil light is on, I'm finding metal shavings in the oil and the warning light in the speedometer is coming on. I have the feeling that my engine oil pressure might be too low. Have any of you ever experienced anything like this? How did you get it resolved at the garage? Any advice and experiences would be appreciated!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2014 Toyota GT86, I'm not a car expert but have a little experience with cars. I also took it to the garage because they had used the wrong engine oil. I paid 175.0 euros to fix the problem. What I would suggest is to take your car to a trusted garage to have it checked. However, to give you more accurate guidance, could you give me more information about your vehicle? What engine oil are you using? Have you carried out any maintenance work recently? This could help us to better understand your problem.

Thank you for your feedback! I use 5W-30 engine oil and did the last service at a mileage of 239871 km. I suspect something is wrong with the oil filter. I will take the car to my trusted garage and hope they can solve the problem.

Yes, the suspicion about the oil filter may well be correct, I had the same phenomenon with my GT86. You write that you use 5W-30 engine oil, and I used the same. After I went to the garage, it turned out that small metal particles had got caught in my oil filter because I was using a cheap product at the time. That's why I now only use branded products for the oil filter. That solved the problem for me and the warning light has not come on since then. Keep your fingers crossed that it is as easy to solve for you and that there is no major problem! Stay careful and have it checked by the mechanics. I can't wait to see what your garage comes up with. Feel free to let them know afterwards!

That sounds like a viable solution. Maybe I made the same mistake and used a cheap product for the oil filter. Thanks for sharing your experience with me - it gives me hope that the problem is quite easy to fix! I'll take it to my garage and get it checked out. I'll get back to you with an update, thanks again for your valuable advice! You have really helped me.
