Hi guys, I'm having a problem with my 2006 Toyota Hilux petrol engine. The check engine light is on, the engine runs erratically, jerks when accelerating, stutters when idling and the power is significantly reduced. I think it could be the tank ventilation system, but I'm not sure. Have any of you ever had similar problems and can give me tips on how to narrow it down? How did you get it resolved in the workshop? I would be grateful for any experience.

Hi, I once had a similar problem with my 2004 Toyota Hilux Diesel. Another Toyota model is the RAV4, but my experience concerns the Hilux. I consider myself someone with some car knowledge, but I am not a professional. When I had this problem, I went to my trusted garage. They then discovered that the hoses were clogged. After they cleaned the hoses, my car ran like clockwork again. Unfortunately, the whole thing cost me 175.0 euros. To be able to help you more precisely, it would be helpful if you could give me some additional information about your car. FOR EXAMPLE: When was the last inspection? Are there any particular incidents that preceded the problem? That way I might be able to help you even better.

Hello, thank you for your quick reply. I had my last inspection a good year ago at around 145000 KM. Since then I have driven a good 150687 KM without any noticeable problems. That sounds plausible with the hoses, it's possible that the hoses on my Hilux have also become clogged. The car has always worked well and apart from regular inspections and the replacement of wearing parts, I haven't had to have anything done. Is there any way I can check this myself before going to the garage?

Hey, no problem. To be honest, it's difficult to check this yourself, especially as you say that the inspection was over a year ago. After such a long time and with this mileage, problems can arise. The issue with the hoses is just one possibility. It could also be a spark plug, ignition coil or the mass air flow meter. Such problems often lead to the symptoms you describe. Replacement and maintenance work should always be carried out by specialists to avoid damaging anything. But if you really want to check something before you go to the workshop, you could check the oil level. If it's too low, this will also lead to a loss of performance. The condition and tension of your timing belt are also crucial for good engine running. The fuel filter could also be clogged, preventing the engine from getting enough fuel. But honestly, my advice would be to stop putting it off and go to the garage. Even though I enjoy working on my car myself, there are things that are better left to the professionals, especially when it comes to safety. Take care of yourself.

Hi, thanks for the advice. You're right, it's probably better to have it checked by a professional. The oil level looks good so far and I haven't seen anything abnormal on the timing belt either. I think I'll go straight to the garage tomorrow morning and have it checked. I don't want to take any risks for safety reasons. Thanks for your help though, I'm grateful for any tips. Take care of yourself too!
