Problems with the key and possible antenna defect in VW Touran petrol engine 2012

Key fob issues

Hey sports fans, I have a strange problem with my 2012 VW Touran petrol car. It seems that the key no longer works properly. My guess is that maybe the antenna in the bumper is broken. Have any of you ever had a similar problem and can give me a few tips or experiences of how you fixed it in the workshop? I'm really looking forward to hearing your experiences. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I had a similar problem with my VW Tiguan, built in 2010. I have little experience with cars, so I contacted my trusted garage. The problem was a defective cable connection to the bumper antenna. The repair cost me 260 euros. For more details, it would be helpful to know whether you have received any error messages and how exactly you are experiencing the problem. What is the overall condition of your vehicle, has it been serviced regularly? Or has there been anything conspicuous recently that could indicate this defect?

Thank you for your quick reply! Fortunately, my Touran is still running on time and flawlessly with 186543 kilometers on the clock. The last time the car was serviced was just over six months ago. There have also been no particular incidents or error messages to indicate this. It's just that sometimes the key doesn't seem to be recognized. It's definitely odd because it only happens once in a while. The cost of the repair you quoted seems reasonable - maybe I should just contact the garage. Thanks again!

No problem, I'm glad I could help! Your situation sounds really similar to mine back then. Obviously it seems to be an intermittent problem, which makes things a bit more complicated. But like you said, it might be best to go to the garage and get it checked out. It could actually be that it's a similar cable connection issue to the one I had. In any case, I wish you the best of luck and hope the problem can be fixed quickly and cheaply. Don't hesitate to keep us up to date here in the forum!

I will definitely do that! Thank you again for your support and valuable advice. Hopefully it really is just a small problem with the cable connection. I'll make an appointment at the workshop and then we'll see. As soon as I know more, I'll let you know. Thanks again and have a nice day!

Have you been able to find out what the problem was? In my case, it was actually the antenna itself. Water had collected in the antenna, causing the electrics inside to oxidize. So it simply had to be replaced.

Hey, I don't know where the antennas for the keys are located on the Touran, but that could definitely be a possible cause of the fault. Especially if both keys no longer work properly. What else can be tried is to replace the batteries in the keys to see if it improves.
