Problems with the headlight cleaning system on the 2006 Toyota Highlander - looking for solutions and tips

Headlight cleaning system without function

Hey guys, my Toyota Highlander (2006 model, gasoline engine) has a strange problem with the headlight cleaning system - it just won't work! I suspect it might have something to do with low wiper fluid level. Have any of you had similar experiences and can give me tips on how to solve the problem? What solutions has your garage found for such problems? Any tips would be really helpful!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2004 Toyota RAV4, but first, I'm not an auto mechanic, but I do have a bit of experience with cars. So, I had the problem checked out at my garage and they told me that there was an intermittent faulty communication problem between ECUs that was affecting the operation of the headlight cleaning system. The whole thing cost me just under 955.0 euros to fix. Could you please give me more information about your car? How many kilometers have you driven, have you ever had problems with the control units, etc.? Then I might be able to give you some useful advice.

Thanks for the answer! My Highlander currently has 48514 kilometers on it, nothing special was found during the last service. I can't remember any problems with the control units either. Your experience sounds really interesting, I would never have thought that the control units could affect the cleaning system, maybe I should have it checked. 955 euros is quite a lot, but if it solves the problem, it would be worth it. Thanks again for the tip!

Hey, I'm glad that my experience is helpful to you. If your Highlander only has around 48,000 kilometers on it and there have been no problems with the control units so far, it could actually be the wiper fluid. Have you checked the fluid level in the meantime? If it's too low, the cleaning system could actually be failing. So, before you spend 955 euros to have the control units checked, I would first check whether there is enough fluid in the tank - this could also be a cheaper solution. So, always check the obvious first before digging deep into your pockets. Hope this helps you!

Sure, thanks for the second useful piece of advice! I'll check the wiper fluid and hope it fixes the problem. I really appreciate your help. If that doesn't work, I'll consider the ECUs. I'm glad I asked you, otherwise I probably would have gone straight to the garage. You really do learn something new every day! Thank you!
