Problems with the camshaft phasing in the VW Passat 2005: experience and solutions wanted

Check engine light on

Weird engine noise

Hey guys, my 2005 VW Passat with a gasoline engine is having problems. The check engine light is on, it has loss of power, rough engine running, poor fuel economy and weird engine noise. I suspect it could be something with the camshaft phasing. Have you had similar experiences and can you give me some tips on how you had the problem solved in the workshop? Would love to hear about your experiences. Thank you very much...

Hi, I had a similar experience with my VW Golf, model 2003. The engine was also running rough and there were problems with the camshaft adjustment. I would describe myself as a car expert with little experience, so I took the car straight to the garage. The diagnosis was indeed that the valve mechanism had run in. The repair cost me around 430 euros. The mechanics were very helpful and explained to me that it always makes sense to have something like this repaired in the workshop. Have you looked to see if there are any metal shavings in the oil? Maybe then I can say more about it.

Hey, thanks for the tip, I checked and there were metal shavings in the oil. My car currently has 236455 km on it and the last service was a while ago. I can already tell that it's not the youngest anymore. I'll probably have to go to the garage and have it checked... Thanks for the tip!

Hey, definitely take it to the workshop! The metal shavings in the oil could be a sign that something has broken in the engine - perhaps even the camshaft phasing, as you suspect. With so many kilometers on the speedometer, this is not at all unusual. I've also had the problem with the camshaft phasing myself. I had many of the symptoms you mentioned, and the repair wasn't exactly cheap either. So it could really be the camshaft phasing on your car, I would definitely have it checked. Keep us up to date and good luck!

Hey, thanks for your understanding and advice! I'll take the car to the garage tomorrow and have the camshaft adjustment checked. Hopefully it's nothing too bad...it's just an old hand, my VW. I'll keep you up to date! Thanks again and see you then!

Servus, It's best not to drive the car for the time being, otherwise you'll end up with even more damage and have the fault memory read out. Bye

What are your experiences? What findings were made during the workshop visit? I currently have a similar problem with my vehicle and am hoping for some helpful advice here.
