Problems with starting and lighting in the Toyota Yaris - possible causes and solutions

Dim or flickering lights

Weak battery when starting the engine

Hi folks, my Toyota Yaris (gasoline engine, built in 2010) has been acting up recently. It starts badly and the lights are dim or even flickering. Could this be due to a heavily discharged vehicle battery, as I suspect? If you have had similar experiences: How did you solve the problem? How did it work in your workshop? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my Toyota Corolla (built in 2008). My experience with cars is on the low end, but I was actually able to identify the problem myself. My first guess was like yours, a discharged battery. However, I then drove to the garage. It turned out that the control unit was faulty. It cost around 600 euros to replace this part. As the symptoms and the vehicle are quite similar, it could also be the control unit in your case. To help further, it would be useful to know more about your vehicle. What is the exact mileage and general condition? Are there any other noticeable problems?

Hey, thanks for your quick reply! My Yaris has already done 130116 KM. With the exception of this starting problem and the weak lighting, it runs quite well. There have been no similar problems in the past. My last inspection was two months ago and everything seemed fine. I will follow your recommendation and also go to the garage to have the ECU checked. I hope it doesn't cost too much. Really thanks for the tip, I'll report back when I know more!

Hey, I'm glad I could help! Considering the mileage of your car, it could well be that the control unit is the problem here too. But don't worry, it's always better to be safe than sorry before committing to high repair costs. Hopefully it won't be too expensive. I'll keep my fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly and you can get going again soon. Stay safe and get in touch after the workshop visit. Hopefully you'll have good news to report then! Stay healthy and safe!
