Problems with starting a 2012 Benz Viano - Possible causes and workshop experience

Car won't start

Vehicle starts briefly and goes out again

Hey guys, I recently started having a problem with my 2012 Benz Viano, gasoline engine. The car either won't start at all or stalls again shortly after starting. Could it be the immobilizer? Have any of you experienced something similar and can give me some tips or troubleshooting advice? Would also like to hear your experiences with the garage, how was the problem solved for you? Thanks in advance for any tips.

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2010 Benz Vito. I'm not a car professional, but I do have a bit of experience with cars. In my case, the control unit/antenna of the immobilizer was damaged. I had to go to the garage because I couldn't repair it myself. It cost me 365 euros and then the car ran perfectly again. Another thing that helped me was reading out the fault memory, has your garage already done that? Can you say a bit more about the symptoms, how exactly does the car behave when it won't start or goes out? Then perhaps I can go into more detail about your situation.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. Unfortunately nothing was found when I read out the fault memory, that was also my first port of call. So when I turn the key, all I hear is a click and sometimes the engine starts briefly and then immediately stops again. This happens a few times and then at some point it starts again. But I'll bring up your idea about the control unit/antenna at the next workshop visit. So far I haven't noticed anything, my last inspection was at a mileage of 93668 km, but everything was still OK then.

Hey, no problem, it's fun to talk about cars! You could be right about the immobilizer, but it also sounds a bit like a starter or battery issue to me, especially if all you hear is a click. Have you tested your battery or tried bypassing the car? That helped me when the engine only started briefly. If that's not it, it might also be worth looking at the fuel pump. Of course, this is just a guess, I'm not an expert. But if the engine starts briefly and then stops again, it could be that not enough fuel is coming in. Your mechanic might be able to check this. Regardless of this, clarify this with the immobilizer, maybe that's where the problem lies. I hope this helps you for now and you can get the thing running again quickly!

Hey, those are really good points that I hadn't thought of - the battery and the fuel pump. The battery is still fairly new, so I hadn't considered that, but I'll definitely test it. And I haven't thought about the fuel pump either, but I'll check that too. Thank you so much for your help and time, that's really great! I hope I'll soon find out what the problem is and then I can finally drive again. It's impressive what you can learn from strangers! So thanks again for the helpful tips and for sharing your experiences! I'll keep you up to date.

I'm chasing up Re: Carly Ticket 1344601. Basically, no matter which phone I install Carly on, I can read diagnostic info, and read live data, but I can't clear error codes. I get no activity spinning wheel and just see the message 'will take several minutes....' I have kept it running for 25 minutes, but no response from Universal adapter ver. 'J1' I've re-installed Carly software about 8 times, with no luck. Perhaps the Universal adapter is at fault? Please respond, or send me another adapter to try. Cheers, Manny Adolph You will see from my login email (ancuk@aol.com) that I use Carly regularlty to clear errors.....but it has stopped the ability to clear error codes

It sounds like you're having trouble with your Carly Universal Adapter. If you've already tried reinstalling the software multiple times without success, it might indeed be an issue with the adapter itself. However, before concluding that, you might want to try using the adapter with a different phone or tablet, if possible, to rule out any device-specific issues. If the problem persists, I recommend reaching out to Carly's customer service directly for further assistance. They might be able to provide more specific troubleshooting steps or arrange for a replacement adapter if necessary. Please keep us updated on your progress.
