Problems with smoking and juddering Mercedes ML Diesel 20 - causes and solutions?

Strong exhaust smell

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Longer cold start time

Jerking on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Hey guys, I've got a bit of a problem with my 2010 Mercedes ML Diesel. It's recently started emitting black smoke when accelerating, the engine indicator light is on and it takes longer to start cold. There is also a loss of power, jerking when accelerating and a bad exhaust smell. Consumption is also high. I suspect that the problem is with the mixture, perhaps too rich? Have any of you had similar experiences and can you give me a few tips on how your garage solved the problem? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I'm not a car professional either, but I do have some experience with cars. I had a similar problem with my Mercedes GLK Diesel, model 2012, so it may be the same problem. In my case, the fuel pressure regulator was broken and needed replacing. I went to my garage and described the symptoms. They then carried out a diagnosis and found that the fuel pressure regulator was the culprit. The replacement cost me about 2 euros. Can you please give me more details about your car? Maybe then I can help you better. Vehicle details such as mileage and last service could be helpful. I hope that helps you for now.

Hey, thanks for your reply! My mileage is 989 km and I was last in the garage about 40 km ago for an inspection. No problems were found there. So I'll follow your advice and have the pressure regulator checked. Thanks again!

Sure, no problem! With your mileage, it could well be that certain parts are starting to show their limits. If you had an inspection about 40k miles ago and no problems were found, there could be something in between. Is your fuel consumption above the normal range? If so, then it really seems like there is a problem with the mixture formation. A fouled lambda sensor could also greatly affect the mixture formation and therefore fuel consumption and cause black smoke. So, if the fuel pressure regulator is OK, please have the lambda sensor checked as well. Sometimes the problem is not just one broken part, but a combination of several small problems. Good luck with the troubleshooting and let us know what the mechanics find!

Hey, thanks for the further advice. I'll tell them about the lambda sensor too. Unfortunately, my consumption is really above the normal range. I just hope that the repair won't be too expensive. I'll keep you posted as soon as I find out anything new. Thanks again for your help!
