Problems with Skoda Octavia Diesel 2016: Black smoke, engine control light, loss of power and DPF regeneration problems

Strong exhaust smell

Check engine light on

DPF regeneration failure

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Dear community, I have a tricky problem with my Skoda Octavia Diesel, built in 2016. The car no longer runs smoothly and shows various abnormalities: Black smoke when accelerating, the check engine light is on, noticeable loss of power, DPF regeneration is not working and the exhaust smell is quite intense. Could the problem possibly be due to the efficiency of the particulate filter? Has anyone had similar experiences and can give me tips on how they solved the problem in the workshop? Any experience is helpful! Thanks, guys and gals!

Hello, I had a similar problem with my Skoda Superb Diesel, built in 2014. I already have a bit of experience with cars, even though I'm not a professional. I did some investigations at my garage and found that the diesel particulate filter was internally defective. After seeing the symptoms, I went to the garage and they first carried out a fault diagnosis. The result was that the DPF was damaged internally and had to be replaced. This repair cost me 1550 euros. I do small things myself, but I prefer to call in the professionals when it comes to major problems like this. I need more vehicle information to share more specific details and help. There may be differences between models or years that could be relevant here. Can you provide more details about your Skoda? Good luck with the repair!

Hey, my Skoda Octavia has already done 108932 km and the last service was recently. I hope that helps you. Unfortunately, your experience doesn't sound so reassuring...1550 euros is a lot of money. But thanks for your feedback!

Yes, I totally understand that, it's annoying to have to spend such a sum on repairs, especially when the vehicle hasn't done that many kilometers yet. But unfortunately, diesel particulate filters wear out over time and then have to be replaced. If I were you, I would definitely take it to a garage and have a professional look at it. It could also be helpful if they carry out a DPF regeneration. Sometimes this is sufficient and can prevent a filter replacement. However, if this has only recently been tried unsuccessfully, then it probably looks like a new DPF. Ultimately, it's probably cheaper and less stressful in the long run to tackle the issue thoroughly now rather than keep facing minor problems. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it might be something less costly! Best wishes and cheer up! It will work out!

Hello again, thank you very much for the detailed information and your honest opinion. It doesn't sound like I can avoid taking my car to the garage. Hopefully they'll have a quick appointment for me and the whole thing can be resolved quickly... Somehow you're always happy when you can be on the road again without any worries! I'll definitely let you know how things progress. So here's to a good one and see you soon! Bye.
