Problems with Skoda Octavia 2013: Engine won't start and warning light illuminates - suspected defective water sensor

Engine shuts off by itself

Car won't start

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Greetings, I have a problem with my Skoda Octavia (built in 2013, petrol engine), it's doing some strange things at the moment. It won't start, the engine switches off by itself and a warning light comes on at the speedometer. I suspect that the water sensor is faulty. Have you ever had anything like this and how did you get it fixed at the garage? What experiences have you had? Every tip helps, thank you!

Hi, I'm not really a car expert, but I do have some experience with similar problems. I had a major annoyance with my Skoda Superb (built in 2011, also petrol). The symptoms sound really similar to the ones I had and in my case the sensor was actually defective. The garage did a good job in my case. The fault was found quickly and the broken sensor was replaced. The cost of this in my case was 95 euros. So maybe that will help you as a guide to your problem. To be able to help you more precisely, it would be good if you could give me some more information. For example, which warning light is illuminated in your case? Have you noticed any other symptoms?

Thanks for the quick reply! The warning light that comes on for me is the engine light. The car also sounds a bit strange. Such a strange rattling sound. I last had the car checked 100 km ago. The mileage was 115000 km and nothing negative was found. Well, no problems with the sensor or anything. I'm reassured by the costs you mentioned, I hope it stays at that amount. It's my first car and I really have no idea about all the technical stuff.

Hello again, so if the engine light comes on and you notice a strange rattling noise, then this could well be due to the water sensor. It was similar in my case. The rattling in particular was a clear sign. Please remember, I'm no expert, but a broken sensor can mean that the engine coolant no longer cools the engine properly. If the engine then runs hot, this can certainly lead to such noises. With your last workshop visit and the mileage of 115000 km, it sounds a lot like my case back then. My Superb had around 120000 km on the clock when it had a similar defect. I would definitely recommend that you don't drive for too long, otherwise you risk engine damage. Take it to the garage as soon as possible and have it checked properly. As I said, the costs were still within my budget as long as you don't wait too long. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! Good luck!

Thank you very much for the information and the quick reply. I also suspected that it could be something more serious. Especially because of the rattling. Your advice sounds really sensible, I'll leave the car at the garage for now. I don't want to risk damaging the engine. Your experience reassures me a little and gives me a good starting point. I also hope that the costs will remain within reasonable limits. Thanks again for your help!
