Problems with Skoda Fabia key and warning light in speedometer - Possible battery drain on ignition key

Hello, I have a strange problem with my Skoda Fabia, year of manufacture 2015, petrol engine. Recently, the lock or key has been acting up, and there is also a warning light in the speedometer. Could the battery in the ignition key be flat? What are your experiences with this and what have your garages done to fix the problem? Thanks for any tips!

Summary of the thread

The issue revolves around a Skoda Fabia experiencing problems with its key and a warning light on the speedometer. The possible cause suggested is a flat battery in the ignition key, which is supported by the fact that the key is six years old and such batteries typically last around 5-6 years. The recommended solution is to replace the key battery, preferably with a high-quality one to prevent recurrence of the problem.

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2013 Skoda Rapid. I have to admit that I have only moderate experience with car repairs, but my garage is great. After I explained the problem to them, they suspected that the battery in my key was flat. They fitted a new battery and the problem was solved. It only cost me 40 euros. You could try having this checked at your local garage. Can you perhaps provide more information about your vehicle: such as the exact model, exact mileage and how old your key is? I might be able to help you a little better with that.

Thanks for the quick and helpful answer! My Fabia has done almost exactly 86324 km so far. I got the key with the car, so it's already 6 years old. Maybe the battery really is flat. I'll definitely have it checked out at my garage. Hopefully it won't cost me more than your 37 euros. Thanks again!

No problem, always happy to help! Your key is actually a bit older and it could well be that the battery is simply flat. Smart batteries normally last around 5-6 years, so €40 sounds like a fair price to me. It's also not a lot of work for the workshop. You should just make sure that they fit you with a high-quality battery so that you don't have the same problem again in a year's time. If you have any more questions, please let me know!

Mathias, your feedback is really great. I didn't realize that key batteries only last 5-6 years. All right, I'll make sure I install a good battery. Thanks to your tips, I now feel well prepared. Thank you very much and have a nice day!
