Problems with shifting and transmission oil temperature sensor in a BMW 1 Series Diesel (2018)

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Grinding noise when shifting gears

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Hello everyone! I have a problem with my 2018 BMW 1 Series diesel. The gearshift slips from time to time, it makes a grinding noise when changing gear and the warning light in the speedometer lights up. I suspect a fault with the transmission oil temperature sensor, but I'm not sure. Have any of you ever had the same problem and can give me some tips on how it was fixed in the workshop? Would love to hear your experiences and possible solutions. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I have little experience with cars, but I had a similar problem with my BMW 3 series diesel, year 2016. The cable/connector on the sensor was defective on my car. I had it repaired in a garage and it cost me 155 euros. However, to help you more accurately, I need more information about your vehicle. What attempts have you made so far to solve the problem? What error messages are you getting exactly? Even if the vehicles are very similar, the problem could be slightly different in your case.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. So my gearbox oil was changed at the last service about 2000 km ago, since then the problem has occurred. The error message says "transmission oil temperature high", which leads me to think it's the sensor. I reset the maintenance messages and replaced the sensor, but after a few days the message came back. I am now at 132844 km and the problem is really bothering me. Your solution sounds quite logical, maybe I should have the plug checked too. Thanks for the tip!

Hey, no problem, that's what we're here for, to help each other. Interesting that the problem occurred after changing the transmission oil. On my 3 series diesel, the problem also occurred after the service. It was a cable break on the sensor connector itself, not on the sensor. Maybe it's a similar problem for you, just because you say it reoccurs after you've replaced the sensor. I would recommend that you go to the workshop and ask specifically about this. Have them check the connector and the cables to the transmission oil temperature sensor. It could be that there is a fault somewhere there. Good luck with that, let us know how it turns out!

Hey, that sounds really plausible. I really hope that it only needs a small repair and is nothing serious. I'll go to the garage first thing tomorrow morning and pass on your advice, maybe the mechanic can then look specifically for the fault and offer me a suitable solution. Thanks again for your help, I'll get back to you as soon as I have any news!
