Problems with Renault Trafic Diesel: Black smoke, high consumption and engine failure

Jerking on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Unsteady engine

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Engine shuts off by itself

Shaking while idling

Check engine light on

Stalling while idling

Hi folks, my 2006 Renault Trafic Diesel is doing strange things at the moment. When it accelerates, black smoke comes out of the exhaust. The check engine light comes on and the engine simply switches off. From time to time there is also a loss of power and the engine runs unevenly. It jerks when accelerating and fuel consumption has increased significantly. Have you ever experienced anything like this? At first I thought it was a defect in the mass air flow sensor, but I'm not sure. I would be particularly interested to know how you got the problem solved in the workshop and what your experiences were. Any tips and experiences would be really helpful.

Hello, I had a similar experience to yours, but with my 2008 Renault Master Diesel. I would describe myself as someone with little knowledge of cars. My Renault had similar problems, I remember the unusual black smoke and higher fuel consumption. The problem was "damage to the wiring harness", which I had repaired at my regular garage. In my case, the repair cost 95 euros. However, to be able to help you in more detail, it would be helpful if you could give me more information about the vehicle. How many kilometers has the car already covered? And how often is maintenance usually carried out?

Hi, thanks for your quick reply. My Trafic has now covered 80392 km. The last service was about six months ago, when everything was generally checked. Damage in the wiring harness, that's interesting, I wouldn't have thought of that. I'll have it checked to see if that could be the problem in my case. Your information is already helping me.

Hey, I'm glad I could help! Given the number of kilometers on your Renault Trafic, there could indeed be cable damage. However, there could be other reasons with your model. It could be a problem with the exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR) or the diesel particulate filters could be clogged. Both would fit the symptoms you have described. My mechanic explained to me that a blockage in the EGR valve can cause the valve to stop working properly, which in turn can lead to increased fuel consumption and reduced performance. This can also cause the engine to behave erratically and occasionally stall. Of course, I can't say for sure from here, but these would be points that I would have checked. Maybe it will help if you take it to your mechanic. Good luck! Hope you get the problem solved soon!

Hey, thanks for your detailed reply and the helpful tips. Sounds quite plausible with the cable damage, the EGR valve and the diesel particulate filters. It looks like I won't be able to avoid a visit to the workshop. Whew, I just hope it won't be too expensive. I'll take your good advice to heart and take it up with my mechanic. I'll let you know as soon as I know more. Thanks again and have a nice day!
