Check engine light on

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Renault Scenic petrol engine from 2006, which is showing a few symptoms: black smoke when accelerating, the indicator light is on, engine power is down, the engine is not running smoothly, jerking when accelerating and poor fuel consumption. I somehow suspect that the heater of the lambda sensor could be defective, but I'm not sure. Have any of you had similar experiences and know what the garage does in such a case and how expensive it was? I would appreciate a few tips on the best way to tackle this. Thanks in advance!

Hi. So, I'm not a car mechanic, but I do have a bit of experience with cars, particularly my 2008 Renault Clio. It had a similar problem to yours. In my case, I had a faulty engine control unit which caused numerous symptoms like yours. I took my car to the garage and explained everything to them in exactly the same way. After a few tests, they noticed it and replaced it for me, which cost me 1000 euros. It would be helpful if you could give us more information about your car, then I could help you even better: like mileage or when you last serviced it. Hope that helps you!

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! Well, my Scenic has 92771 km on it and the last service was only a few weeks ago. I didn't tell the garage about the problems because they hadn't been there yet... 1000 euros is of course a lot of money, I hope it's cheaper for me. Do you have any ideas as to what I could check before my next visit to the garage?

Hey, no problem, always happy to help! Well, with just over 90,000 km something can break, it was no different with my Clio. Before visiting the workshop, you could perhaps have the fault memory read out. This can give you an initial indication of what the problem might be. On some cars you can even do this yourself, but I don't know if it's as easy to do on your Scenic... And you could see if you can find a leak somewhere. I once had a hose that wasn't really tight and was drawing air, which led to symptoms similar to yours. But don't worry, it was a simple and cheap fix. All in all, it's still difficult to say without a precise diagnosis. I don't think your idea about the lambda sensor is completely outlandish, but it could be anything... I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's nothing major!

Hello, thank you very much for your tips. The fault memory would indeed be something I could try. And I hadn't even thought about looking for a leak! I really hope it's nothing serious. But it doesn't help, I'll have to go to the garage and have it checked... I'll let you know again when I know something new. Thanks again and all the best!
