Problems with Renault Kangoo 2011: Black smoke, loss of power and high fuel consumption - Is the boost pressure sensor defective?

Poor fuel economy

Jerking on acceleration

Strong exhaust smell

Loud hissing on acceleration

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Check engine light on

Whistling noise

Loss of engine power

Hello folks! I have recently noticed some problems with my 2011 Renault Kangoo with diesel engine. When accelerating, black smoke comes out of the exhaust and the engine light is on. The engine power also seems to be diminishing and the car jerks quite a bit when accelerating. In addition, there are these loud hissing noises when accelerating and the fuel consumption seems to have increased enormously. There is a strong smell coming from the exhaust and I can hear a whistling noise. My guess is a defective boost pressure sensor. Could this be the cause? Have any of you ever had similar experiences and if so, how did you have this solved in the workshop? I look forward to your tips and experiences. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I'm not a professional, but I do have a bit of experience with cars. I had a similar situation with my 2009 Renault Scenic. It does sound like your turbocharger is faulty. That was the problem for me too. I took my car to my regular garage and told them the problem. They then read out the fault and replaced the defective turbocharger. It cost me a total of around 1070 euros. Without exact details about your car, I can't tell you any more. Can you provide details such as model, mileage, etc.? Then I might be able to help a little more precisely.

Thanks for your answer. My Kangoo is from 2011 and already has 95327 km on the clock. Last service was about a year ago. Hm, a defective turbocharger sounds really expensive... Does anyone else have any tips? Maybe there's a cheaper solution. I'll go to my garage in the next few days and have it checked.

Hey, glad I could help. A broken turbocharger is really expensive, but I'm afraid there's no way around it if that really is the problem. As I said, that was the case for me too. Before my mechanic replaced the turbocharger, I had exactly the same symptoms as you. The whistling and hissing are pretty clear signs of a defective turbocharger. The high fuel consumption and black smoke could be due to the engine not getting enough air because of the faulty turbocharger and therefore using more diesel. But that's just a guess, only your mechanic will know for sure. If I were you, I would have taken the car to your garage anyway and had it checked. Because the longer you wait, the more expensive it could become... By the way, given the mileage of your Kangoos, I wouldn't rule out a defective turbocharger, especially if you often drive short distances or drive a lot in the city. Stay tuned and let us know what the mechanic says. Good luck!

Thank you very much, that was very helpful. Yes, you're right, the symptoms really do point to the turbocharger. Yes, I mainly drive short distances and am often out and about in the city. I will take your advice to heart and go to the garage as soon as possible before it gets even more expensive. I'll definitely keep you posted when the mechanic has found the problem. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Hasse, it seems like you're dealing with a complex issue. The glow plug light can indeed indicate problems beyond the glow plugs themselves, such as issues with the fuel injection system. Since you've already replaced the glow plugs and the relay, and the problem persists, it might be a good idea to have a professional mechanic run a diagnostic check on your vehicle. This could help identify if there's an issue with the fuel injection system or any other component. Please keep us updated on your progress. Do you have any other questions?
