Problems with Renault Espace Diesel 2004: Black smoke, reduced engine performance and failed DPF regeneration

DPF regeneration failure

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Strong exhaust smell

Check engine light on

Hello folks! I have a strange problem with my Renault Espace Diesel, built in 2004. The car emits black smoke when accelerating, the indicator light is on, the engine power is reduced, the DPF regeneration does not work and it smells strongly of exhaust fumes. I think the efficiency of the particulate filter may be too low. Have any of you had experience with such symptoms and can give me some tips? How was the problem solved in the workshop and what experiences have you had with it? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I once had a similar problem with my 2002 Renault Scenic. Although I have little experience with cars, I could tell that something was wrong. I then took my car to my local garage. They identified the problem as defective diesel particulates due to high mileage. They replaced the particulate filter and the whole thing cost me about 1550 euros. Now the car is running perfectly again. Can you give me more information about your vehicle? Maybe I could help you with my experience. What is the exact model and how many kilometers does your car have on the clock?

Hey, thanks for your answer. The model of my car is an Espace. The odometer currently reads 126983 km. My last service was a few months ago, but the particulate filter was not checked. Your experience sounds very similar to my problem, I think I'll have it checked too. 1550 euros sounds expensive, but if it solves the problem, it would be worth it. Thanks for your advice!

No problem, always happy to help! With your mileage, it is indeed possible that the DPF (diesel particulate filter) could be the problem. Especially if the filter wasn't checked at your last service. Sometimes simply regenerating the filter can do the trick, but if the DPF is too full, it may need replacing. With my Renault Scenic it was just over 1500 euros including fitting and everything, maybe it's similar with your Espace. In any case, it is advisable to have this checked in the workshop before any further damage occurs. I hope I was able to help you!

Hi, yes, you have really helped. It seems that the DPF could be the problem and needs to be checked. I will take the car to the nearest garage and have a closer look at the particulate filter. Your experience with the Scenic was certainly helpful. The cost is quite high, but if it fixes the problem, then it's worth it. Thanks again for your help!
