Problems with Renault Espace 2021: illuminated check engine light, diminishing power and faulty exhaust back pressure sensor

DPF regeneration failure

Loss of engine power

Hey guys, I have a problem with my Renault Espace petrol engine from 2021. The check engine light is on, the power is dropping, the DPF regeneration is not working properly and there is something in the fault memory. I suspect that the exhaust back pressure sensor is faulty. Has anyone had similar experiences and can give me tips on troubleshooting? I am particularly interested in how your garage solved the problem and what experiences you have had. I am grateful for any help!

Hi, so I had a similar problem with my 2019 Renault Scenic. Don't have much experience with cars, but what I've learned is that the problem could actually be severely overcharged DPF, not the exhaust back pressure sensor. I got my trusted mechanic to do it and he replaced the DPF. It cost me 1325 euros, but I haven't had any problems since. It was an expensive mistake, but it was worth it because I got my car back. Can you please give me more details about your car, mileage, DPF residue etc.? Maybe I can help you better with that.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! At the moment my Espace has just under 118196 km on the clock. Well, I hope it has something else, because DPF replacement sounds pretty expensive. I don't have that much money available right now either. Let's see what my garage has to say. I'm still happy to hear any opinions.

Moin, I understand your concerns, you always want the most favorable scenario. With that kind of mileage, the DPF can actually be the problem, although cars today can generally run longer with the first DPF. But as is often the case, it depends a lot on the driving style and driving conditions. City driving and short distances are not good for the DPF. If you are really short of money, professional cleaning of the DPF could be an alternative to replacing it. It's not cheap either, but it's a lot cheaper than a new DPF. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough for my Scenic, but it is an option. If it really is the exhaust back pressure sensor, it will probably be cheaper. But be sure to have it checked by a specialist workshop before you decide. Hopefully that will help a little. All the best!

Hi, thanks for the tip about having the DPF professionally cleaned. That would certainly be cheaper than a complete replacement, that's true. I haven't been to the garage yet, but now I'm a bit reassured. I was really worried that it could be something bigger. I really can't afford expensive repairs right now. I'll give your suggestion a try and see what the garage says. Thanks again and have a nice day!
