Weird engine noise

Hi folks, I'm currently having a few problems with my 2005 Renault Clio petrol engine. The check engine light is on, I can feel a loss of power and the engine is running rough. When accelerating, the car jerks, fuel consumption is higher than usual and strange noises are coming from the engine compartment, especially when the valves are being adjusted. Could it be that something is wrong with the camshaft adjustment? Has anyone here had similar experiences and can give me tips on how to fix the problem? How did you get this solved in the workshop and what was your experience? I look forward to your answers. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my Renault Twingo, model year 2003. I'm just a hobby mechanic with little knowledge of vehicles, but maybe I can help you a little anyway. On my Twingo, the camshaft timing was defective due to worn rubber sealing rings. The symptoms were very similar to yours. To fix the problem, I took my car to my trusted garage. The guys there are really competent and replaced the defective parts. The whole thing cost me about 1620 euros, but since then the car has been running perfectly again. Can you tell me a few more details about your vehicle? Mileage, when you last adjusted the valves, etc. With a little more info I might be able to give you some more tips. Hope this helps a little!

Hi, thanks for your helpful answer! My Clio currently has 115203 km on the clock. The valves were checked and adjusted at the last service about six months ago. Apart from that, no major repairs were carried out. Your tip about the camshaft control sounds really plausible, I would have to have that checked in the workshop. Of course, 1620 euros is a lot of money, but if the car runs again, it would be worth it.

Hi, thanks for the further information! With over 115,000 km, it's actually conceivable that some parts on your Clio are starting to wear out, and of course this could also affect the camshaft timing. The fact that the valves were adjusted at the last service 6 months ago is actually a good thing. However, this could be the reason why the worn rubber seals are becoming noticeable. Why else would the valves make adjustment noises? I had a case like this once, and it was the camshaft seals that had to be replaced. So I can understand your concern. If you're lucky, your garage is in a more favorable region or your model is a little cheaper to repair and you can get away with less than 1620 euros. But of course, that's still a good chunk of money. I hope this helps you and wish you the best of luck!

Hello, thank you very much for the additional information and advice! It really could be the seals, I hadn't really thought about that before. I think it's good that you had the same problem and now I know what to do. To be honest, I'm hoping the repair at my garage will be cheaper. I'll probably make an appointment next week and hope everything is back to normal. Thanks again for your support! I'll keep you up to date.

Hey, My first tip would be to have the car read out to narrow down the fault. Without a fault code, it will be relatively difficult to narrow down the fault. Take car
