Problems with preheating symbol, DPF regeneration and increased fuel consumption in Peugeot 406 Diesel (2005)

DPF regeneration failure

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Pre-glow light won't turn off

Longer cold start time

Check engine light on

Car won't start

Poor fuel economy

Hey guys, I have a problem with my 2005 Peugeot 406 Diesel. Strangely, the pre-glow symbol no longer goes out, I also notice black smoke when accelerating, the check engine light comes on, the cold start takes longer and it no longer starts. The fuel consumption is also higher than usual and apparently the DPF regeneration no longer works. I suspect that a glow plug may be defective, but I would like to make sure again. Have any of you ever experienced something like this and can give me a few tips on how your garage solved the problem? I would be really grateful for your experience.

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2003 Peugeot 407 diesel, I'd say I have a bit of experience with cars but I'm not a professional. I went to my local garage to fix the problem and it turned out that a glow plug was broken and needed to be replaced. That cost me 560 euros. An expert explained to me that the glow plug was faulty due to wear and tear. Could you perhaps give me more details about your car? For example, how many kilometers has it done and when was the last time the glow plugs were changed? Then I might be able to help you more precisely. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for the quick reply! My handcart already has 166410 kilometers on the clock. The last inspection was about 8 months ago, but phew, I can't remember when the glow plugs were last changed. I think you might be right about the wear... I'll have it checked at the garage, the 560 euros really hurts, but what can you do, right? Thanks again for the tip, buddy! Hopefully it's nothing worse.

Hey, no problem! If it's around 166k kilometers, some parts will probably already be worn out. The glow plugs are always a bit of a problem... They often break without you noticing. So if you can't remember when they were last changed, it's probably time to think about it. The 560 euros hurt me back then too, I can tell you that! But it's better than something bigger, right? So it's better to have it checked at the garage. Even if it costs a bit, it could save you a lot more in the end. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's nothing worse. Drive safely and take good care of yourself and your Peugeot! Will you let me know if you have any news? I'd be really interested to hear what happens next. Greetings

Moin, sure, no problem, I'll let you know if there's anything new. I'll take your advice and have it checked at the garage. Maybe it really is time to change the glow plugs. There's a cost involved, of course, but I agree with you that it's better to spend some money now and save more money and hassle later. Wish me luck! I'm counting on good old Peugeot! Thanks again and you take good care of yourself too. Regards
