Problems with Peugeot 208 Diesel: Black smoke, reduced performance and increased fuel consumption

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

DPF regeneration failure

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Poor fuel economy

Hi guys, I have an annoying problem with my 2014 Peugeot 208 Diesel. When accelerating, black smoke comes out of the exhaust, the check engine light comes on, the engine power is reduced and the engine runs rough. In addition, the DPF regeneration is not working properly and fuel consumption has increased. I suspect that the pressure in the diesel particulate filter is too low. Has anyone had similar experiences and can give me tips on how they fixed the problem at the mechanic? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I have little experience with cars, but I had a similar problem with my 2012 Peugeot 206 Diesel. The mechanic at my local garage found out that my diesel particulate filter was defective. It cost me 1550 euros to fix it. Maybe it's the same problem with your car? I would recommend that you go to the garage and get it checked. But to help you better, I might need some additional information about your car. How many kilometers have you driven so far? When was the last time you changed the DPF? Have you replaced any other parts recently?

Thank you for your reply. My 208 Peugeot has 21709 kilometers on the clock so far and the last service was recently. Unfortunately I have never changed the DPF. I'm not sure if that's the problem or not, but I'm starting to think it might be. Will definitely follow your advice and take the car to the garage. Would just like to have known what it could be before I go. But thanks again for the help!

Sure, that sounds like a good idea. With the symptoms you describe, it does seem likely that it could be something to do with the DPF or the fuel system. My old Peugeot had very similar problems and in the end it really was the DPF that had given up the ghost. In retrospect, the mechanic also explained to me that low pressure in the diesel particulate filter is a typical symptom as you describe. Fortunately, in my case it was only the DPF and not the fuel system. With so few kilometers on the clock, it's still early days for a broken DPF, but nothing is impossible. I would definitely give it a try. Don't waste any more money because it was a minor issue in the end! And take better care of your car next time! In any case, I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's nothing worse.

Hi, thanks for your advice and encouragement. Your experience helps me to have more confidence in the idea that it could actually be the DPF causing the problem. From what you've said, it's probably best to take the car to the garage and get the DPF checked. It's annoying enough that the car is running rough and fuel consumption has increased. I don't want to waste extra money because I ignored the problem for too long. I will take better care of my car and have it serviced more regularly in the future. It was very helpful talking to you. Thanks again for taking the time to help me! You really made my day better.
