Problems with Peugeot 106 petrol engine: black smoke, irregular engine running and high fuel consumption

Loss of engine power

Jerking on acceleration

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Poor fuel economy

Hey guys, a few things are going crazy with my 2000 Peugeot 106 gasoline engine. Black smoke when accelerating, engine light on, less engine power, uneven engine running, jerking when accelerating and high fuel consumption. I suspect a defect in the lambda sensor. Does anyone have experience with this and can give me some troubleshooting tips? I am particularly interested in how your garage has solved the problem and what experiences you have had. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2002 Peugeot 206. Well, I have medium experience with cars. There was black smoke and jerking when accelerating, just like yours. My mechanic found that the exhaust was leaking. We decided to replace it completely, which cost me 265 euros. After that, the bumpy engine running and jerking under acceleration stopped. Can you perhaps give me more details about your car so that I can help you better? Mileage, last inspection, etc. Hope that helps you a little!

Hi, thanks for your quick reply! My Peugeot currently has 88619 KM on the clock and the last inspection was just recently. Interesting that it was the exhaust in your case - I wouldn't have guessed that. I'll take it up with my garage. Your information will definitely help me. Thank you!

Hey, no problem, you're welcome! It's good to know that your Peugeot was recently serviced. That could shed a different light on the lambda sensor issue. Perhaps the problem could be caused by something other than just the lambda sensor. As I said, in my case it was leaks in the exhaust system. But a clogged air filter can also show similar symptoms, as I have also experienced. Have it checked out. Good luck with the troubleshooting and hopefully it won't be too expensive!

Yes, I really appreciate your advice! You're right, it could definitely also be a clogged air filter, I hadn't considered that. But it's good to know that there are many possible causes and that the lambda sensor doesn't necessarily have to be faulty. I will definitely take your suggestions to the next workshop visit. Thanks again for your help! I hope the repair won't be too expensive.
