Problems with overheating and low coolant level in Vito 2015 model - experiences and possible solutions

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Coolant level low

Overheating

Hey guys, I have a problem with my Vito 2015 model with gasoline engine. Somehow it's not running as usual. The warning light from the speedometer comes on, it overheats frequently and the coolant level is low. Could it be that a low coolant level is the culprit? Do any of you have experience with this and can possibly give me tips to narrow down the fault? How did you have this solved in the workshop and what was your experience? I look forward to your advice!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2013 Sprinter, also a Mercedes-Benz. To be honest, I have limited experience with cars, but my master mechanic helped me a lot. In my case it was sporadic faulty communication between the ECUs, which cost 955 euros. He did a full troubleshooting first before fixing the problem and advised me to watch out for warning lights or similar symptoms. There really could be many causes for your problem. To give you more details, could you please give me more information about the symptoms your car is showing? That would help to give more insight and plan further steps. Hope this helps you!

Hey, thanks for your reply! So the running engine sounds a bit rattly and it doesn't cope with the inclines like it used to. The temperature gauge is also rising quite quickly. What's strange is that the coolant is constantly running low, but there are no stains under the car. The last service was also at 158716 km, but the garage didn't notice anything unusual. Maybe it all has something to do with the overheating? Looking forward to your further advice.

Hey, thanks for the further details. It definitely sounds like there are multiple issues going on at once. The rattling could indicate a few problems, maybe even related to the overheating. A faulty water pump or a leaking radiator hose, for example, could be the reason why the coolant is constantly diminishing and there's nothing underneath. The overheating and the loss of cooling water are probably linked. If the cooling system is leaking, the cooling circuit is interrupted, which leads to overheating. It could also be that the thermostat is stuck and the coolant is not flowing properly through the system. I would recommend that you first top up the coolant level and see if you can find a leak anywhere. If that doesn't help, you should perhaps take the car to the garage and have them carry out a pressure test on the cooling system. By the way, on the subject of the garage: In my case, the repair was relatively expensive, but afterwards the car ran like a charm again. So I can only advise you to have it checked professionally. I hope this helps you!

Hello, thank you very much for your advice! I did indeed suspect a possible leak in the area of the water pump. A thorough check definitely needs to be carried out. I will follow your advice and take the car to the garage to have them take a look. For a car in this price range, it's worth it to me to invest in a professional check. Thanks for sharing your experience with the mechanic. I hope my Vito will be in top shape again! Stay healthy and have a safe journey!
