Problems with Opel Vivaro 2001: Strange engine noises, increased fuel consumption and knocking combustion - tips and experience wanted

Poor fuel economy

Weird engine noise

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Hey guys, I have noticed some abnormalities with my 2001 Opel Vivaro with gasoline engine. I notice a strange engine noise, the check engine light is on, it consumes more fuel than usual, jerks when accelerating and the engine power decreases. My suspicion is that there could be knocking combustion in at least one cylinder. Have any of you ever had a similar problem and could give me tips on how you had it fixed in the workshop and what your experiences were? I am grateful for any help!

Hello, I had a similar problem with my Opel Vectra 2003. I'm not a car expert, but I do know my way around a bit. They cleaned the deposits in the combustion chamber at my garage, which cost 425 euros. The result was very good and the car runs like before. But to be able to help you more precisely, can you give me more information about your vehicle? For example, what is the mileage and when was the last service carried out? All the best, (name)

Hey (name), thank you for your quick and helpful reply. My Vivaro currently has 93440 km on it and the last service was just recently. It's really strange that I'm suddenly having these problems after the car has just been serviced. I'll definitely take your tip into consideration and ask the garage whether it would make sense to clean the deposits in the combustion chamber. I'll report back as soon as I have any news. Do you think it could be something else, or are you also leaning towards the story with the knocking combustion? Thank you, (name)

Hi (name), I'm glad I could help you. With almost 93,500 kilometers, this can happen, even if it's frustrating at first after a fresh inspection. After all, an engine like this is just a little machine that isn't built to last forever. As I said, cleaning the deposits in the combustion chamber worked well on my Vectra, but there may of course be other causes. Knocking combustion is definitely a possibility. But perhaps the catalytic converter could also be clogged - this can also lead to loss of power and increased fuel consumption. Defective ignition coils are also a known problem with the Vivaro. The symptoms could match this. Maybe you should have them checked too. Good luck and let us know what comes out! Greetings, (name)

Hey (name), thanks for your detailed reply! You're right, the machine is not made to last forever and problems like this can occur from time to time. It's just a bit annoying that it occurs so soon after the inspection. I will definitely follow your suggestions and ask the garage if they can check the catalytic converter and check the ignition coils. Knocking combustion remains a possibility of course, but maybe it will actually be one of those other problems. I'll keep you posted as soon as I know anything new. Thanks again for your help and see you soon! (name)
