Problems with Opel Signum 2007: Engine, ABS/DSC system and lighting

Weak battery when starting the engine

ABS/DSC system is not working

Engine shuts off by itself

Dim or flickering lights

Hi folks, I've experienced something strange with my Opel Signum, built in 2007 with a gasoline engine. The engine stops by itself, the ABS/DSC system is acting up, the lights are flickering and the battery seems weak when starting. My suspicion is the alternator, but I'm not sure. Have any of you had similar experiences and how did you get this resolved at the garage? Free advice is always welcome. Thank you!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2005 Opel Vectra. Unfortunately I'm not a car mechanic and only have mediocre experience with cars. I ended up having to pay 1000 euros because my engine control unit was defective. Errors like that can be pretty annoying, can't they? Have you ever had the fault memory read out? If not, that might be a good place to start. And more details about your vehicle may also be helpful, such as the exact engine version and mileage. Maybe then I can help you a bit more. Best regards

Thanks for the quick reply! Reading out the fault memory is a good idea, I hadn't thought of that yet. I'll have it checked as soon as possible. Oh yes, for info: My Signum has about 158820 km on it and the last service was 6 months ago. Hopefully it's not a problem with the engine control unit, that sounds pretty expensive. Thanks for the advice though! Best regards back!

No problem, always happy to help! It's really annoying when cars have such quirks. They can drive you crazy. The engine control unit was expensive fun for me, yes. But it could also be something simpler, which is why reading out the fault memory is really recommended. You're right, the symbol lights could indicate a problem with the alternator, but it could just be the battery. Have you ever had a deep discharge? I once had a case like that where the alternator was defective and kept draining the battery. The cost was around 300 euros. Definitely have it checked. If you ignore it, it can lead to major damage. Hopefully it's not that expensive for you. Good luck and let me know what comes of it! Best regards

Thanks for the additional tips! I don't think I've ever had a deep discharge, but I'll definitely have it checked. The 300 euros almost sounds like a bargain compared to a faulty engine control unit. It's annoying, but I'm glad I've found someone here to help me narrow down the possible problems. I'll check with the workshop and let you know what it was. Until then, take care and thanks again! Best regards
