Problems with Opel Cascada Diesel 2012: Black smoke, engine malfunction and starting difficulties

Car won't start

Longer cold start time

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Engine shuts off by itself

Check engine light on

Hi guys, I'm having a few problems with my 2012 Opel Cascada Diesel. Black smoke comes out of the exhaust when accelerating, the check engine light is on, the engine just cuts out, cold starts take longer and sometimes the car won't start at all. I suspect it could be the fuel filter heater, but I'm not sure. Have any of you had similar experiences and can give me some troubleshooting tips? How have your garages solved the problem? I would be delighted to hear about your experiences. Many thanks in advance!

Hi, I only have some experience with cars, but I had a similar problem with my Opel Insignia 2010 diesel. It turned out that the wiring harness/plug of the fuel filter heater was damaged. In the end, the garage solved this problem for me, but it cost €110. It is quite possible that you have a similar problem. Do you possibly need more fuel in the tank when this problem occurs? What is the general condition of your car? If you give a bit more info, I might be able to help better.

Thanks for your feedback and your tip about the wiring harness. Tell me, did the check engine light come on for you as well? Speaking of the condition of the car: My Opel has already clocked up a few kilometers, 189947 km to be exact, and the last service was about 6 months ago. Since then I have driven another 10,000 km. The tank is usually always at least half full when the problem occurs. But the wiring harness sounds like a good point that I should have checked! Thanks again!

Hey, no problem, I'm happy to help! Yeah, I had the check engine light on too - that could be a common symptom I think. Your Opel obviously has some miles on it, but I don't see why this would be a particular problem here as long as it's serviced regularly. How was the health of your wiring harness at the last service? Was it checked at all? It could have been inadvertently overlooked during a previous service. With the information that your tank is always half full when the problem occurs, I really think you should get it checked. Hopefully it's as simple as mine! Good luck!

Hello again! Ah okay, the information with the indicator light actually makes me more confident that it could be the same problem. About the last service: I'm not even sure if the wiring harness was explicitly checked. There was nothing on the invoice, but they didn't list every single thing they checked. But I'll take that as a clue and have it explicitly checked at the next garage. If that is the fault, that would be really great, because then I would have a relatively inexpensive repair ahead of me! Thank you very much for your help and tips! You really know your stuff and have helped me a lot!
