Problems with Opel Captiva 2013: Black smoke, high consumption and unstable engine running

Stalling while idling

Loss of engine power

Poor fuel economy

Engine shuts off by itself

Check engine light on

Strong exhaust smell

Unsteady engine

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Hey guys, I have a few problems with my Opel Captiva, year of manufacture 2013, gasoline engine. It does strange things, like black smoke when accelerating, just jumps out, no longer pulls properly, jerks when accelerating and also consumes a lot of fuel. In addition, the exhaust smells quite strongly and the engine runs unevenly. It also dies sometimes when idling. The check engine light is also on. I suspect that it could be the fuel injection. Does anyone have any experience with such symptoms and can give me a few tips? How did you get this solved in the workshop and what were your experiences? Thanks in advance!

Hello, I have had similar experiences with my Opel Antara, built in 2011. I'm not a car mechanic, but I've had similar experiences with my own cars. At my local garage, it turned out that the engine control unit was faulty. They repaired it for me and it cost me 1000.0 euros. After that the car worked great. Can you give me more information about your vehicle? More specifically, when was the last time you changed your spark plugs or cleaned the air filter? All these factors could contribute to your problem and help to understand it better and offer suggestions for solutions if necessary. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the tip! Last service was around 15,000 km ago. I can't remember exactly when the spark plugs were changed, but I think it was 40,000 km ago, so the next change is probably due. The air filter was last cleaned during the last service. My speedometer now shows 141622 km. Maybe it's actually the engine control unit. I'm just wondering whether I should ask the garage about it. It's strange that the car is acting up like this, I've never had any problems with it.

Gosh, given the symptoms and the mileage, it really could be the engine control unit. Spark plugs should be changed about every 30,000 km on your model. So it could also be that your spark plugs simply need changing. But there are many possible causes and it's hard to say without seeing the car. I would recommend you get the car checked professionally. Have them check the engine control unit and the spark plugs. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the repair won't be as expensive as it was for me! Good luck, buddy!

Thank you very much for your helpful tips. I'll probably go to the garage tomorrow and have the engine control unit and spark plugs checked. I really don't need the expensive repair, but if there's no other way... in any case, thanks for thinking along and sharing your experiences! I guess I'll get back to you when I know more. See you then!
