Problems with Mini Cooper Diesel 2009: Black smoke, poor performance and high fuel consumption

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Poor fuel economy

Loss of engine power

Hello, I have a problem with my Mini Cooper Diesel (built in 2009), it just doesn't do what it's supposed to anymore. It emits black smoke when accelerating, the engine light comes on, the performance is noticeably worse, the engine runs unevenly, it twitches when accelerating and the fuel consumption is also higher than usual. I suspect the problem could be the lambda sensor. Have any of you had similar problems and if so, how did you get it fixed at the garage? I would be pleased to hear your experiences and tips. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I had a similar problem with my Mini Cooper S Diesel (built in 2007). I'm not a car expert, but I do have some experience. In my case, the cable/connector of the lambda sensor was faulty. I took the car to my garage and they fixed the fault. It cost me 95 euros, which I think is reasonable. Could you please give me more information about your car? In particular, it would be helpful to know if you have done any repairs or modifications to your car. This may help us to better isolate the problem. Ultimately, you may also have a cable and lambda sensor problem!

Hey, thanks for your reply! My Cooper now has 114700 km on the clock and I just had the last service done recently. Regarding other problems or repairs, hmm... so honestly, I haven't done any major things yet. I've taken good care of my Mini and always made sure to do all services on time. I thought it might actually be the lambda sensor as that could explain some of the symptoms. Well, I'll probably pop into the garage and mention the cable and the lambda sensor. Thanks again!

No problem, always happy to help! It seems like you've already been very proactive with your Mini, which is great. In fact, the mileage is relatively high, so it could well be time for a lambda sensor repair or replacement. The symptoms you've given could indicate this, especially if you notice that your car is burning fuel inefficiently and the engine is running rough. In any case, stay tuned and make an appointment at the workshop as soon as possible. Be sure to mention the problem with the lambda sensor so that they can immediately address the possible cause. And don't forget to ask for a cost estimate before the work begins. I hope your garage can fix the problem quickly and inexpensively. Good luck!

Okay, thanks for the quick reply and your advice. I also think it might be time to change the lambda sensor. After all, the car is no longer the youngest and already has quite a few kilometers on the clock. I'll take your advice and make an appointment at the garage as soon as possible. And thanks for the tip about the estimate, I'll definitely take that into account. Hopefully the problem can be solved quickly and without too much expense. Thanks again and have a nice day!

Hello Eva Have you already read out the fault memory? If so, what does it say?
