Problems with Mercedes SL Class Diesel 2005: Power loss, engine noise and suspected camshaft adjustment

Weird engine noise

Unsteady engine

Valve adjustment noise

Loss of engine power

Metal shavings in oil

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

I have a problem with my 2005 Mercedes SL Class Diesel, which is not running smoothly. The engine light is on, the engine is losing power and running rough, the car pulls when accelerating and the fuel consumption is higher than normal. There are also strange engine noises and metallic particles in the oil - and I suspect it has something to do with the camshaft phasing. But before I go to the garage, I'd like to know if anyone has experienced these problems before and how they were fixed. Any tips would be very helpful!

Hey, I once had a similar problem with my 2007 Mercedes E-Class diesel. My experience with cars is average, so don't worry, I'm no expert. I went to my garage and they were able to help me. In my case, the valve mechanism was broken in/defective and it cost 405 euros to repair. Can you perhaps give me a few more details about your car? The model, mileage, condition of the engine, etc., maybe then I can help you more precisely. Don't forget that it's still best to have a professional look at it to be on the safe side!

Hello, thanks for the quick reply! My Merc now has 153699 km on it and the last service was october last year. It has always been well maintained. So I'll definitely keep the valve mechanism thing in mind when I go to the garage. Thanks for the tip!

Hey, I'm glad I could help you a little! With the number of kilometers, wear parts such as the valves are of course often an issue, so this could actually be the cause. Especially if you also find metallic particles in the oil, that's a pretty clear indication. These particles can come from damaged valves or camshafts. And if these no longer work properly, this can lead to the symptoms you have described - loss of power, uneven engine running, etc. But really think about having the car checked by a specialist. No matter what you are familiar with or not, in the end it should be done by a professional, especially with safety-relevant parts such as the engine! So, keep us up to date and good luck with your Mercedes! Remember, what counts in the end is that you are safe on the road.
