Problems with Mercedes ML Class Diesel 2008: Headlight stays on, black smoke and high fuel consumption

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Check engine light on

DPF regeneration failure

Poor fuel economy

Pre-glow light won't turn off

Car won't start

Longer cold start time

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Mercedes ML Class Diesel, built in 2008. The preheating light stays on, black smoke comes out of the exhaust when accelerating and the Check Engine light is on. The car also starts badly at cold start and sometimes not at all. Fuel consumption is high and my DPF regeneration is failing. I suspect the cause could be a glow plug fault. Do any of you have experience of such problems and can give advice on troubleshooting? What experiences have you had when you had such problems rectified in the workshop? I look forward to your tips and experiences. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had similar problems with my 2006 Mercedes ML class diesel and I would describe myself as someone who only has basic experience with cars. I also had a glow plug fail due to wear and tear. I took my car to a garage near me. They pretty quickly became aware, based on my description, that a glow plug could be the problem. They replaced all four to be safe and to save me further visits in the near future. The entire repair cost me 560 euros. But for a more accurate diagnosis and recommendation, it would be helpful if you shared a few additional details about your car. How many kilometers has it run? When was the last time it was serviced? Any information can be helpful. I hope you can solve your problem quickly. Good luck!

Hello and thank you for your help! My car has run 60009 km so far. The last service was only recently before these problems occurred. I agree with the cost of 560 euros if it means that I can avoid further visits to the garage. So I will follow your advice and have the glow plugs checked and possibly replaced at a garage. Thanks again!

No problem, I'm glad I could help! Yes, that definitely makes sense. Given the low mileage of your car, it is also possible that the glow plugs are not yet defective due to wear. Maybe it was just an isolated incident. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's nothing more serious and that your ML will soon be back in top form. And yes, having them all replaced will hopefully help you have fewer garage visits in the long run. Please let us know how it goes. Have a safe journey!
