Problems with Mercedes ML Class Diesel 2008: Engine indicator light, loss of power and loud hissing noise

Jerking on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Loud hissing on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Shaking while idling

Hey guys, I'm having some problems with my 2008 Mercedes ML class diesel. The check engine light is on, it has less power, the engine runs rough, twitches when accelerating, there is a loud hiss when accelerating and the car shakes when idling. I thought maybe it was due to the faulty swirl flap control on the intake manifold. Have any of you ever had similar problems and can give me tips on how to fix them? I would be particularly interested to know how you solved this in the workshop and what your experiences were. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had similar problems with my 2006 Mercedes GL class diesel, the problem was that the swirl flap was broken. I don't have that much experience with cars, I just like driving them! As I don't have much experience with cars, I took my car to the garage. The professionals there carried out a complete check and found that the swirl flap in the intake manifold was broken. The repair cost 865 euros, but after that the problem was solved: no shaking, no hissing, the engine ran smoothly again and the performance was back to normal. To be able to help you more precisely: How many kilometers has your car done? Was a specific error message displayed in the on-board computer? Has it shown any other signs recently? Looking forward to your details and hopefully I could point you in the right direction.

Hello, thank you for your quick reply! My car already has 60009 km on the clock. The last service was recently, but since then there have been these problems. No specific faults were displayed in the on-board computer, only the check engine light came on. Apart from that, I haven't noticed any other abnormalities. Your experience with the swirl flap doesn't sound so encouraging, of course, as the repair doesn't sound exactly cheap. But I'll take it up with my garage. Many thanks for the tip!

Hi again, thanks for the feedback! Yes, at 60009 km it could well be the swirl flap. It was similar with my GL. Of course, it's stupid when things like this occur directly after servicing, but maybe it was just a coincidence. In any case, the symptoms you described sound very much like a swirl flap. Especially the shuddering at idle and the hissing when accelerating were the same for me. I would definitely talk to your mechanic about it. He can certainly make an accurate diagnosis. And yes, the repair is unfortunately not cheap. But in the end it was worth it, because since then the engine has been running smoothly again and all the problems have disappeared. I hope it's the same for you and that your ML will soon be fit again! Feel free to get in touch if you have any further questions or if you have any new information. I'd be interested to know if it was actually the swirl flap. Good luck with it!

Hello again, thank you very much for your advice. It's really reassuring to know that I wasn't the only one who had such problems. I will definitely talk to my mechanic about the swirl flap and hopefully I can find a solution that isn't so expensive. Your advice was really helpful and I will definitely get back to you as soon as I have any new information. The shaking and hissing are very annoying, so I hope that it really is the swirl flap and that I can fix it and get my car running as it should. Thanks again for your help!
