Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hi guys, I'm having problems with my 2005 Mercedes ML class petrol engine. It smokes black when accelerating, the check engine light is on and sometimes the engine just stalls. In addition, there is loss of power, rough engine running, jerking when accelerating, low fuel efficiency, stuttering at idle, and the car shakes when stationary. I suspect that the mass air flow sensor could be the culprit. Have you ever had similar problems and had them fixed in the workshop? I would like to hear your experiences. Any tips would help me. Many thanks in advance!

Hello, I have had a similar problem with my 2007 Mercedes GLK-Class Diesel. My level of vehicle knowledge is so-so, so I'm no expert either. But what I've learned is that you shouldn't always assume the worst case scenarios straight away. In my case, it was a simple damage in the wiring harness that caused the same problem. It cost me 95 euros to have the problem fixed in the workshop. Maybe it's similar for you. But to be able to help you properly, it would be good to have more information about your vehicle. Things like mileage, condition of the spark plugs etc. could be important. Hope this helps you a little!

Thanks for the quick reply. My mileage is 171113 km, so pretty high. But I have been servicing my Benz regularly, even though it's been a while since the last time. Spark plug condition... hmm, I really need to check that. Just wasn't necessary until now. Well, it's probably a bit more serious for me when I hear your example. But hey, thanks for the tip! I'll have it checked at the garage.

No problem, always welcome! With such a high mileage and the fact that you haven't had the car serviced for a while, a few problems may have accumulated. A visit to the garage is definitely a good idea. Don't forget to check the spark plugs, that could be an important clue. Of course, a defective mass air flow sensor can cause some of the symptoms you have described, but there could also be other problems. In any case, it's hard to say without having seen the car. In my experience, it has always proved worth having a thorough check done when so many symptoms appear at once. The diagnostic fee in my case was absolutely worth the money and led to the problem being identified and fixed. So, take the advice to heart and definitely get it checked by a professional. I hope it's nothing serious and that you'll soon be back on the road without any problems!

Thanks again for your help. You said it well. I think it really is time for me to see an expert. I didn't realize that so many problems could really occur at once. A thorough check-up wouldn't be wrong now. I'll make an appointment with the garage tomorrow. I hope it's nothing serious, but I'll have to be prepared for it to get thick. I'll let you know what comes out. See you then and thanks again, you've really helped me!
