Problems with Mercedes GLC-Class 2015: smoke, jerky acceleration and failed DPF regeneration

Jerking on acceleration

Check engine light on

Strong exhaust smell

DPF regeneration failure

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hi guys, I urgently need your help. My 2015 Mercedes GLC Class with diesel engine is not running as usual. When accelerating, there is a lot of black smoke from the exhaust, the engine control light is constantly on, the DPF regeneration always fails and the vehicle jerks violently when accelerating. The whole thing is accompanied by a strong exhaust smell. It seems to me that the diesel particulate filter is heavily loaded. But I am not sure if this is the only problem. Has anyone observed similar symptoms in their car and can give me any troubleshooting tips? In particular, I would be interested to know how your garage has solved the problem and what your experiences have been. Many thanks in advance!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2013 Mercedes E-Class. Honestly, I'm not an automotive specialist, I just have some experience with cars. As for the fault, the same thing happened with my car: black smoke, burning check engine light, failed DPF regeneration, exhaust jolt on acceleration and a strong exhaust smell. The cause in my car was actually the diesel particulate filter (DPF) - internally defective. I took my car to the garage, had to replace the DPF and it cost me 1550 euros. But after that, everything was fine again. It would be helpful if you could tell me the mileage of your car and the details of the last service, then I might be able to help you more. Hope that helps a bit!

Hi, thanks for your quick reply. My car has actually already done 192341 kilometers. I actually only had the last inspection a month ago and everything was fine then. Your story sounds very similar to my situation. I just hope it won't be that expensive for my car. Maybe there's someone else here who knows a cheaper solution?

Now that you've given me the details, I would definitely recommend that you take your car to a garage. Almost 200,000 KM is a decent mileage and your DPF could have suffered just like mine did back then. Unfortunately, such costs do occur from time to time with older cars, even with good brands like Mercedes. Of course, there could also be another problem causing the jerking and the strong smell, but the professionals at the garage should be able to find that out. So my advice: don't hesitate and have the car checked before anything else happens. All the best!

Oh gosh, I didn't like your answer, but I know you're right. I'm going to take my Mercedes to the garage tomorrow and have the DPF checked. I just hope it won't be too expensive. Thanks for your valuable advice though! Wish me luck, this is going to be expensive fun!
