Problems with loud engine noise and exhaust in Toyota Aygo (2016): Malfunction of the exhaust flap?

Hi guys, I have a problem with my Toyota Aygo (built in 2016, petrol engine), which is behaving unusually. I hear a loud engine noise when the engine is cold and the exhaust also seems to be louder than usual. I think it might be due to a malfunction of the exhaust flap in the exhaust, but I'm not sure. Have any of you had similar experiences and can give me tips on how to isolate the problem? How did you solve this in your workshop and what were your experiences? It would be great to hear your tips and experiences! Many thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A Toyota Aygo owner is experiencing unusually loud engine and exhaust noise, particularly when the engine is cold. They suspect a malfunction of the exhaust flap might be the cause. A similar issue was resolved in another vehicle by repairing a defective exhaust flap, costing around 190 euros. The owner plans to consult a garage to confirm the issue and prevent further complications.

Hello, I had a similar problem with my Toyota Yaris (year of manufacture 2014, gasoline engine). I'm not a car expert now, but I have a bit of experience because I often take care of small repairs. At my garage, they actually found a defective exhaust flap. The repair cost me 190 euros. Can you tell me a bit more about your car? How many kilometers has it done, when was the last inspection, etc.? That would help me to help you more precisely. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! My Aygo already has quite a bit of mileage on it, exactly 190395 kilometers. The last inspection was recently, so that shouldn't be a problem. I have a suspicion that this exhaust problem may have been going on for some time... just got gradually worse. At 190€ for the repair, I wouldn't hesitate. I think I'll go to my garage and talk to them about it. Thanks for the tip! Best regards!

Hey, no problem, always welcome! With the mileage, it is of course always possible that problems will gradually creep in. So your suspicions could be correct. The most important thing is that you have it checked in the workshop soon so that it doesn't get worse. If it really is the exhaust flap and it's as expensive as mine, then you don't have too much of a financial risk. Your car should also be quieter again afterwards. Good luck at the workshop and let us know what it was! Best regards back!

Yes, I will definitely do that. I don't want to risk it getting worse and then more expensive. I'll definitely get back to you as soon as I know more. Thanks again for your advice and support! Have a nice day! Best regards

I have a 2016 Toyota Aygo with approximately 170,000km. Until today, it hasn't given me any problems; it has been serviced regularly. Today, when entering my workplace car park, while turning left on a very tight bend, the steering wheel turned completely, the power steering light came on and beeped. The steering became very heavy, but I immediately turned the car off and back on, and the light disappeared. Is this cause for alarm?

It's good that the issue resolved after restarting the car, but the power steering warning light indicates a potential problem with the system. Start by checking the power steering fluid level, if applicable, as low fluid can cause issues. If the fluid level is fine or your model has electric power steering, it might be an electrical issue or a sensor malfunction. Since steering is crucial for safety, I recommend having a mechanic inspect it to ensure everything is functioning properly. Let me know how it goes or if you have more questions!
