Problems with Ford Fusion Diesel 2010: Black smoke, power loss and failed DPF regeneration

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Strong exhaust smell

DPF regeneration failure

Hi everyone, I've been having some strange problems with my 2010 Ford Fusion Diesel recently. When I accelerate, black smoke comes out of the exhaust, the check engine light comes on, I'm losing power and my DPF regeneration is failing. And the exhaust smell is quite strong. I suspect that the efficiency of my particulate filter is too low. Has anyone had similar experiences and perhaps some tips for me? Would like to know how your garages solved the problem and what your experiences were. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I have some experience with cars, but I'm not a professional. I had a similar problem with my 2008 Ford Focus Diesel, which is about the same year as your Fusion. Like you, I noticed black smoke and the engine light was on. I took it to my garage and after a few tests they found out that the diesel particulate was faulty due to high mileage. They replaced it and it cost me 1550 euros. Since then the problem has not recurred. For further help, could you please give me more details about your car? For example, how many kilometers it has run and what you have done so far to solve the problem. How often and how far do you normally drive? This could help to better understand the problem and give you better advice.

Thanks for the information! My Fusion already has 105751 km behind it. I only did the usual, i.e. oil change, brake check etc. during my last inspection. I normally only drive short distances in the city. But I've noticed that the problem tends to occur on long journeys. I'm just afraid that it will cost me a lot to have the particulate filter changed. But if there's no other way, it'll have to be done. Thanks again for your help!

Hey, thanks for the additional info. It seems like you use your car mostly for city driving, and that could be part of the problem. Those short trips don't give your diesel particulate filter enough time to fully regenerate. DPFs occasionally need longer journeys at higher speeds to clean themselves properly. I understand that the cost of replacing the DPF is high. However, it might be worth investing in a professional DPF cleaning before you buy a completely new filter. A good mechanic recommended this to me when I had similar problems. In my case, it helped and was the cheaper alternative. I hope this helps you a little and you get the problem under control soon. From my experience, I know that such problems can be really annoying. But hey, no car is perfect and every used car will have problems at some point. Good luck!

Many thanks for the advice. I'll probably consider a professional DPF cleaning before I go straight for a new filter. And you're right, the whole thing is really annoying, but I guess that's just part of owning a car. I will certainly consider more longer drives to try and extend the life of the filter. Thanks again for the help!

Servus, Before you have a new DPF installed, I would also advise you to have the DPF removed and cleaned. There are now several companies that specialize in cleaning the DPF. Normally, you will also receive a test report so that you can see exactly that the DPF is "free" again. Don't forget that the adaptation values must be reset after installation.

Hi Björn! Regarding your error code 2002, I assume you mean P2002? Can you please explain what do you mean by (new particle filter) and if it has been completely replaced or regenerated?
