Problems with Ford Freestyle Diesel 2005: Black smoke, warning light and DPF regeneration

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Strong exhaust smell

DPF regeneration failure

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Hi guys, I have a problem with my 2015 Ford Mondeo diesel, it is showing unusual symptoms such as black smoke when accelerating, the engine warning light is on, loss of engine power, failed DPF regeneration and a strong exhaust odor. I suspect heavy loading of the diesel particulate filter as a possible cause. Has anyone had any experience of this or any tips on how this situation was rectified in the workshop? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello, I had a similar experience with my 2007 Ford Focus Diesel, almost the same model as yours, only two years younger. I ended up with internal damage to the DPF (diesel particulate filter). I am not a car mechanic, but I like to deal with cars and I would say I have a medium level of experience. When I noticed the same symptoms in my car, I went to my trusted garage. They explained to me that many of the symptoms you mentioned could indicate a faulty DPF, which was confirmed. The part had to be replaced and it cost 1550 euros. It wasn't a cheap repair, but since then my car has been running smoothly again, so it was worth the investment. To be able to help you more accurately, could you please provide more information about your car? For example, mileage information, last inspection, etc.? Hopefully this will help you and you will get your problem solved quickly.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. My Ford is encountering these problems at 58007 km. The last inspection was a few months ago, but the problem already existed at that time. I think you're right, the symptoms sound very much like a problem with the DPF. I will definitely visit my garage and have the DPF checked. Just wanted to gather opinions in advance so as not to look totally ignorant. Thanks for the tip!

No problem, I'm glad I could help! With your mileage, it's actually not unusual for the DPF to cause problems. When you're at the garage, have the lambda sensor checked too, just to be on the safe side. This was also defective in my Ford and led to similar symptoms. It's a good idea to find out beforehand. That way nobody can rip you off! Let us know what you end up with. Maybe it will help others here in the forum. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's a smaller and less expensive problem than with my car. Have a safe journey and good luck!

Many thanks for the great advice! I will definitely have the lambda sensor checked. As soon as I find out anything new, I'll share it here, maybe it can help others. And yes, hopefully the repair won't be that expensive. Thanks for the good wishes and help!

Hi, it sounds like your DPF might be clogged. I would try a forced DPF regeneration, or use a DPF cleaner. If that doesn't work, it might need a professional clean or replacement. You could also consult a mechanic for a thorough diagnosis. All the best!

Regeneration doesn't work. Removing DPF filter. Clearing error codes doesn't work either.

It sounds like you've tried a few things already. If the DPF is heavily clogged, it might need a professional cleaning or even a replacement. However, before you proceed with that, I would recommend having the fuel injectors and EGR valve checked. These components, if faulty, can contribute to a clogged DPF. Please keep us updated on your progress. Do you have any other questions or concerns?
