Problems with Ford Expedition 2016: Engine light, smoke and loss of power - experience and solutions wanted

Unsteady engine

Engine shuts off by itself

Stalling while idling

Strong exhaust smell

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Hi guys, my Ford Expedition (2016 model year) is causing me some concern right now. It's showing strange symptoms: black smoke when accelerating, the check engine light comes on, the engine shuts itself off, loss of power, rough engine running, jerking when accelerating, poor fuel economy, intense exhaust odor, and it dies at idle. I thought that the sensor in the low pressure fuel system might be the cause. Have any of you had similar problems and how did you get them solved at the garage? Looking forward to hearing your experiences and suggested solutions. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my Ford Explorer (built in 2014). I would describe myself as someone with little experience with cars. I took the car to the garage straight away because I didn't want to deal with it myself. They found that the wiring connections were faulty, which cost exactly 95 euros to fix. I strongly recommended that you provide the information on the test cycle, test operating conditions, fault code (if any), battery charge status and technical data from your vehicle. With this information we can help to identify the problem more accurately. Hope that helps!

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. I had my Ford Expedition serviced last time at 149003 km, since then the symptoms have appeared. I haven't seen any fault codes, the battery charge status seems to be fine. I'm not quite sure about the test cycle and test operating conditions, I'd have to ask the garage again. But the cost of defective cable connections doesn't sound too bad if that's the solution. Thanks for the tip!

Hey, no problem, always happy to help! Your mileage sounds like a point at which such things can simply occur. If you don't have a fault code, that's actually good news, but with the test cycle and test operating conditions, I'd definitely double check. Well, for me it was the cable connections and it helped, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the same for you. Your symptoms could also indicate problems like a clogged fuel system, faulty spark plugs or a faulty fuel pump. Hard to say without seeing the car. But yes, a garage would definitely be my recommendation. At least they can diagnose it more accurately. To keep the costs down, you can get several quotes, as the prices vary quite a bit. Hopefully you'll get it sorted soon, good luck!

Hey, I really appreciate your quick and detailed reply, thank you! You're right, my symptoms could have several causes. I will make an appointment at the garage and also ask what the test cycle and test operating conditions reveal. Hopefully it's nothing serious and the cost will be limited. Your advice to get several quotes is also a good point. I will keep you posted. Thanks again for your help!
