Problems with Ford C MAX 2014: Exhaust odor, engine faults and suspected EGR valve

Shaking while idling

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Loss of engine power

Strong exhaust smell

Engine shuts off by itself

Hey guys, I have a strange problem with my 2014 Ford C MAX, it has a gasoline engine and is showing some unusual symptoms - it smells strongly of exhaust fumes, the engine just stalls when driving, loses power, is rough and the car shakes at idle. The check engine light is also on. My first thought was that it might be the EGR valve. Have any of you ever had to deal with something like this and could give me a few tips? How did you solve it in the workshop and what experiences did you have? I'm looking forward to your answers!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2012 Ford B MAX, I have medium experience with cars. I went to my garage to get it checked and it turned out that the EGR valve was faulty and stuck. It cost me 355 euros to get it fixed. So it could well be that this is the problem with your car too. Could you give me a few more details about your car so that I can help you more accurately? Engine size, mileage, etc? Hope that helps a little!

Hey, thanks for your quick reply! My car already has 101756 km on it and I had the last service 3 months ago. Engine size is a 1.6 liter gasoline. Hope that helps you a bit more. Is the EGR valve defect a known problem at Ford? Should I go to a specialist garage or can any garage deal with it? And how long did it take you to get it repaired? Thanks for your help!

Hey, no problem! Yes, unfortunately the EGR valve defect is a common problem with Ford, especially with older models. With your mileage, it is therefore quite possible that this part has given up the ghost. In principle, any workshop can deal with this, it doesn't necessarily have to be a Ford-specific one. Regarding your question about the repair time: In my case, it took about a day before the car was roadworthy again, as they had to order the part. But don't worry, you should get a replacement car while it's being repaired. Hope this helps you! Let us know how it goes. Good luck!

Hey, thanks again for your help! That reassures me a little. I'll call my garage tomorrow and ask for an appointment. It was a really good decision to ask for advice here. I'll let you know as soon as the car is running again. Bye and thanks again!
