Problems with exhaust aftertreatment and exhaust leak in Mercedes E Class model year 2005

Exhaust leak

Loss of engine power

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Check engine light on

Strong exhaust smell

Hey guys, I've recently been having a few problems with my old Mercedes E Class (built in 2005, diesel). When accelerating, black smoke comes out of the exhaust, the check engine light is on, the engine power is reduced, there is an exhaust leak and the exhaust smells quite strong. I suspect that it has something to do with a malfunction in the exhaust aftertreatment system. Have any of you ever had symptoms like this and been able to get it fixed at the garage? What was your experience and what exactly was done? I would appreciate any tips and experiences.

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2007 Mercedes C-Class. I have little experience with car repairs, so I took my car to my regular garage. The mechanic discovered a defect in one of the lambda sensors. The repair cost me 375 euros. Can you give me more details about your car? The mileage and last service could be particularly helpful to help you better.

Hey, thanks for your answer! My Benz has already covered 82,293 km and the last service was almost exactly a year ago. I've hardly had any problems with the car so far, so I'm quite surprised. I was afraid it might be something to do with the sensors... I'll probably have to take it to the garage. Thanks for your tip!

No problem, I'm happy to help! With over 80,000 KM, such problems can sometimes occur. It could actually be the lambda sensor, as in my car, which is responsible for the mixture of air and fuel and can fail due to the mileage. The engine can then run "out of round" and cause these symptoms. But the EGR valve could also be the cause, this part is responsible for exhaust gas recirculation and if it is defective, it often produces a strong exhaust odor. Very important, drive to the workshop as soon as possible. If the check engine light comes on, it could be a serious problem. Keep me up to date!

Hey, this is really useful information. You never stop learning! Then I really will have to visit the garage as soon as possible and find out whether it's actually the lambda sensor or the EGR valve. I wasn't even aware that the exhaust smell could be related to this. Many thanks for your help, I'll get back to you as soon as I know what's going on.
