Problems with engine power and warning light on a 2009 Benz G-Class

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Car won't start

Fault stored

Engine shuts off by itself

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Unsteady engine

Hi guys, I have a strange problem with my Benz, a 2009 G-Class with a gasoline engine. The warning light is constantly on, the engine just stalls, I lose engine power, the engine runs rough, the car won't start and the warning light in the speedometer comes on. Something is also stored in the fault memory. I suspect it could be a fault in the engine control unit. Has anyone had experience with a situation like this, how did you solve it and what did the garage do? Would be grateful for any tips!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2007 G-Class. I'm not a car expert, but I do have a bit of experience with cars. In my car, the warning light was always on and the engine was running erratically. The garage diagnosed that there was sporadic faulty communication between the control units. The problem was solved by checking the electrical connections between the control units and installing new components. All in all, it cost me around 955 euros. To be able to help you further, it would be good if you could provide a detailed description of your problem and other vehicle information such as the exact model type or the last work carried out on your car. Perhaps my experience will help you!

Thank you very much for your quick reply! My "G" has 90869 km down and the last service was recently. It's a normal G-Class, not an AMG or anything like that. I contacted the garage but they couldn't tell me much without seeing the car. I'm going to park my car for now and cycle to work until the problem is solved. Your reply definitely makes me feel more reassured. Cheers!

Hey, no problem, we're all here to help, aren't we? It's good that you're not driving your G-Class for now, just to be on the safe side. I can well understand why you're switching to a bike for now! Your garage is right so far, an exact diagnosis is really difficult without the car on site. But I would say that it still has something to do with the engine control unit. Come to think of it, there could also be an electronic fault. Perhaps a sensor has gone bye-bye or the power supply is erratic. Of course, remote diagnosis is always difficult and not 100% reliable. So, I would recommend that you take the car to the workshop as soon as possible. The 955 euros back then were really painful, but in the end it was necessary. I hope that it is a minor fault in your case and can be rectified more quickly. The rule here is: better sooner than later! Hopefully I've been able to help you a little. Keep us up to date! Good luck and it's great that you're taking such good care of your car!

Hello, thank you for your renewed advice and support! I almost figured it could be an electronics fault. I'll take the car to the garage as soon as possible to make sure it's nothing more serious. Your tips are really valuable and help me a lot. Will keep you posted as soon as I know more from the garage. Thanks again for the words of encouragement!
