Problems with engine light and starting difficulties in a Renault VelSatis Diesel 2007: Possible causes and solutions

Car won't start

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Engine shuts off by itself

Longer cold start time

Hey guys, I have a particular problem with my Renault VelSatis Diesel, year of manufacture 2007. The engine light flashes, the engine switches off randomly, cold starting takes longer than usual, there is a loss of power, the engine runs unsteadily and sometimes the car won't start at all. I have a hunch that it could be the crankshaft sensor. Has anyone here had similar experiences and can give me tips on how to have the problem rectified in the workshop? I would be particularly interested to hear about your experiences.

Hi, so I'm definitely not a car mechanic, but have a bit of experience through my own tale of woe. I had a similar problem with my 2005 Renault Espace and it does sound like it could be the crankshaft sensor. In my case, the wiring harness/plug of the crankshaft sensor was defective. The repair cost me 170 euros. I dropped the car off at the garage and the guys fixed it. It was a bit of a hassle and took a bit of time, but luckily they found the problem and fixed it. Could you tell us a bit more about your car, maybe the mileage or any special circumstances? I am not a professional, but I would like to have more information to be able to help you further.

Hi, thank you for the quick reply! My VelSatis now has 41883 km on the clock. Last service was just a couple of weeks ago. I have no special circumstances to report, except that the car is a bit older and I do a lot of highway driving. Hope that helps you!

Hey, no problem, I'm happy to help. With 41883 km on the clock, your Renault VelSatis is still relatively young. In general, I would say that the crankshaft sensor usually lasts longer. But the sensor on my Espace also gave up the ghost at around 35000 km. I had pretty much the same symptoms as you, so I would recommend having the crankshaft sensor checked. Contact your garage, describe the symptoms and ask for an estimate for replacing the sensor. It will cost a few euros, but before you break down on the highway or the engine breaks down completely. That would be even more expensive. Hope that helps you! Keep your fingers crossed that it's something simple and can be fixed quickly!

Great, thanks for the good advice! I'll do that and take my car to the garage and ask about the crankshaft sensor. Sure, it will cost a bit, but safety first. You don't want to break down on the highway. Thanks again for your help!
