Problems with clutch, ABS warning light and strange noises in Ford Focus (2004) - experience and solutions wanted

Whining or grinding noises

ABS warning light

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Hi folks, I have a problem with my Ford Focus (built in 2004, gasoline engine). Lately the car has been giving me some trouble. The clutch is slipping and shifting erratically, the ABS warning light is on and I hear strange noises like a whine or grinding. I suspect that oil wear in the transfer case could be the culprit. Have any of you ever had similar problems and had them fixed in the workshop? Would love to hear about your experiences and how you solved the problem. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I have experienced a similar problem with my Ford Fiesta (built 2002, diesel). Had similar symptoms. I'll say my experience with cars is average - I occasionally do a bit of wrenching, but not a professional. I went to the mechanic at the garage who were efficient and friendly. They explained to me that the problem with my car was that the gearbox was worn out in the oil in the transfer case. They had to replace it and it cost me 210 euros. Could you perhaps tell us more about the behavior of your car? When does the problem occur? What is the weather like when you drive? Also, what is the exact model of your Ford Focus? With a bit more info I might be able to help more specifically. Hope this helps!

Hey, thanks for your answer! So, my Focus is a 2004 with a gasoline engine. Regarding the behavior, it seems to be worse when the car is hot, so after driving for a long time. Also, the problem occurs less in cold weather. And the problem is intermittent. There may be days when it disappears completely and then suddenly reappears. My last service was at a mileage of 109379 km. They didn't find anything abnormal. I'm kind of at a loss at the moment...

Hey, I understand your annoyance. Nothing is more annoying than not finding the fault. With my Fiesta it was like this: if the car has been running for a long time, the oil is thinner and if there is already wear, it becomes more apparent due to the thin oil. So it could be that there is actually some oil wear involved. About the irregularity: Gearboxes can sometimes be temperamental. The symptoms can vary depending on the driving environment. Most of the time, however, it's serious problems that cause such symptoms, and often this can lead to more costly repairs if not addressed immediately. As stupid as it sounds, if I were you, I would go to another garage and describe these exact symptoms. Who knows, maybe they've had something similar before and can help you quickly? I'll keep my fingers crossed that you find a solution soon. Please keep us up to date.

Hi, thanks for your advice, that's a good idea, I'll try the other garage, maybe they can see more than my previous mechanic. It's quite frustrating not knowing what exactly the problem is and how to fix it. I hope it's nothing too serious. I'll keep you posted and have the car checked at the garage next week. Wish me luck!
