Problems with Citroen DS5 Diesel: Black smoke, loss of power and failure of DPF regeneration

Hey guys! I have a strange problem with my Citroen DS5 Diesel, built in 2018. When accelerating, there is black smoke coming out of the exhaust, the engine light comes on and I notice a loss of power. In addition, there is irregular engine running, failure of DPF regeneration and increased fuel consumption. Have any of you ever experienced anything like this? I suspect it could be the diesel particulate filter. Does anyone have experience of such a defect and can give me some troubleshooting tips? I'm particularly interested in how your garage solved this problem and what they thought about it. Many thanks in advance for your help!

Hey. I had a similar problem with my 2016 Citroen C5 diesel, so pretty closely related to your DS5. I acknowledge that while I have some experience with cars, I'm not an expert. When I had this problem, I went to my trusted garage ('Auto-Müller' is the name of the good soul). They did a thorough check and confirmed that the diesel particulate filter (DPF) was indeed internally defective. It was quite an expensive job (cost me 1550 euros), but after the repair my car ran like clockwork again. To help you further, it would be good to know how many kilometers your car has driven and whether you often drive short distances. It could be that your DPF is simply saturated and a professional cleaning could help. See you then!

Thank you very much for your answer. My DS5 only has 13103 KM on the clock, so relatively little. I mainly drive on the highway and hardly any short trips. I didn't think that the DPF could cause problems so early on, but I will probably pay a visit to my garage. Hopefully I won't be faced with a bill like the one you got. But thanks again for your advice!

Hey, no problem, that's what we drivers are there for, to help each other! In any case, it is unusual for a DPF to cause problems so early on. Various factors can influence this, for example poor diesel quality or an incorrect driving style. With my C5, it was probably mainly due to the fact that I was often driving in city traffic. Since you mainly drive on the highway and your car is relatively new, it could also be something else. Either way, your garage should be able to figure it out. If the DPF really is to blame, you can look into alternative repair options. There are some companies that specialize in cleaning and reconditioning diesel particulate filters. This could be a cheaper solution than replacing the entire part. I hope it comes out well for you! Let us know how it turns out. I'm sure there are more people here who are interested in what caused your loss of power and the black smoke. Fingers crossed!

Hello and thank you very much for your further help and valuable tips! I think you're right that I should speak to my garage to check the diesel particulate filter. It's reassuring to know that there are alternatives to replacing it completely. And don't worry, I'll keep you all updated as soon as I have more information! Your advice and experiences are really helpful. So, see you soon and keep your fingers crossed for me!
