Problems with Citroen DS5 2018: black smoke, bumpy engine and high fuel consumption

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Engine shuts off by itself

Strong exhaust smell

Unsteady engine

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Stalling while idling

Poor fuel economy

Hey guys, I have a problem with my 2018 Citroen DS5 gasoline engine. The car is really acting up. When accelerating, it smokes black smoke from the exhaust, the engine light is on, the engine switches off by itself and the car no longer pulls properly. The engine also runs unevenly, it jerks when accelerating, the car needs a lot of fuel, smells of exhaust fumes and stalls when idling. I suspect that the sensor of the low-pressure fuel system could be defective. Have you had similar experiences? How did you get this solved in the workshop? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2016 Citroen C4 petrol car. I have to admit that my car knowledge is rather limited, but still not completely absent. The garage mechanic I knew suspected that my cable connections were faulty. That sounded pretty serious at first, but the professional said it would be relatively easy to fix. He fixed the cable connections and paid me 95 euros for it. To be able to help you better, it would be good to know whether you have already been to a garage. Have the specialists there already made a diagnosis? The more information you can provide, the better we can give you further tips and assistance.

Hi, thanks for your quick reply. Regarding your question, I haven't been to the garage since the last service 148978 km ago. I thought I might as well ask here in the community and get some advice before I have the official diagnosis done. I drive my car quite a lot and it's done quite a few miles, so I'm hoping the fault won't be too expensive to repair. Your cable connection story sounds encouraging at first, not too costly. Also good to know that it is possible to fix such problems easily.

Hey, here we are again. Glad you haven't gone to the mechanic yet. Sometimes these forums can be really helpful to save money and learn about cars at the same time. I remember having similar symptoms to yours. After the cables were fixed, the problems like the jerking, loss of power and black smoke clouds when accelerating were gone. The engine ran more smoothly again and fuel consumption was noticeably lower. It is therefore possible that you have a similar defect. It could also be the sensor from the low-pressure fuel system, as you suspected, but in my opinion it is rather unlikely. Normally this would cause a loss of power at high speed rather than at low speed. Nevertheless, you should definitely have it checked at a garage to be on the safe side. Keep us up to date!

Hello, thank you for the detailed reply. Your experience with your Citroen and the faulty cables gives me hope that it could be the deal for me too. Your point that the sensor from the low pressure fuel system would be more likely to cause a loss of power at high speeds makes sense and is a good hint. So I'm going to take the car to the garage after all and hope it's nothing too expensive. As soon as I know more, I will of course keep you updated here. Thanks again and see you soon.
