Problems with check engine light, loss of power and high fuel consumption in Citroen DS3

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Shaking while idling

Strong exhaust smell

Loss of engine power

Hi guys, I have a few problems with my Citroen DS3 (year of manufacture 2017, gasoline engine). The check engine light is on, the engine has lost power, fuel consumption is high and there is a strong smell of exhaust fumes. The car also jerks when idling. I thought it might be an irregular engine running, but I'm not sure. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on? How have you had such problems fixed at your garage and what were your experiences? I'm grateful for any tips!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my Citroen C3 (built in 2015), there seems to be something in common. Now, I'm not a car professional, but I have had a bit of experience. My garage diagnosed at the time that it was false air due to defective/porous rubber hoses or a defective crankcase breather. After replacing these parts, the problem was solved. The whole thing cost me 235 euros. But I can't say any more as I don't know anything more about your car and the symptoms. Can you tell me a bit more about the driving behavior? Are there certain situations in which the problem gets worse or when exactly does it smell of exhaust fumes? I hope this helps you a little.

Hey, thanks for the feedback and advice! It's good to know that I'm not alone with this problem. What you say sounds quite reasonable, I also suspected it might have something to do with the ventilation. I have a total of 37389 km on it and the last service was a few months ago. I can say about the driving behavior that it jerks and pulls worse, especially when cold. The smell of exhaust fumes is mostly when I have driven longer distances or am stuck in traffic. Hope this helps you to give me some more tips? Thank you!

Hi again, The cold conditions and jerking could actually be a sign that the problem is with the ventilation. It was similar with my Citroen. It was somehow related to defective rubber hoses and the crankcase ventilation. They were replaced and then it ran smoothly again. I'm not so sure about the smell of exhaust fumes on long journeys or in traffic jams, whether it's the same problem or whether there might be something else going on. My tip: definitely have it checked at a garage. Better sooner than later, otherwise it will usually just be more expensive. Good luck, I hope the problem is solved soon!
