Problems with camshaft phasing in a 2016 Citroen DS3 - experience and solutions wanted

Poor fuel economy

Unsteady engine

Weird engine noise

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Metal shavings in oil

Valve adjustment noise

Jerking on acceleration

Hey guys, I have a problem with my 2016 Citroen DS3 with gasoline engine. The car is no longer behaving as usual - indicator light is constantly on, engine power is gone, engine runs out of round, it jerks when accelerating, fuel consumption is high, valve clearance noises, strange engine noises, even metal shavings in the oil. I suspect the problem comes from the faulty camshaft adjustment. Have any of you had similar experiences and can tell me exactly what the problem is? How did you get it fixed in the workshop and what were your experiences? I would really appreciate a few tips and your experiences. Thanks in advance!

Hey, that sounds like a serious problem, but stay cool, I had something similar with my 2014 Citroen C3. I'm not a car mechanic, but I have some experience with car repairs because I try to do as much as I can myself. When I had the problem with my C3, I decided to take it to the garage. The garage technician found that the cam phaser was faulty, just as you suspected. The repair is quite expensive, I had to pay 1260 euros. Without more information, I can't tell you exactly what your problem is, but it could well be that the camshaft phasing unit is also defective. Could you give a few more details about your car and the symptoms you've noticed? That would make it easier to help you. Stay strong, you can do it!

Hey, thanks for your quick reply and the encouraging words! Well, the car now has 122665 KM on the clock and the last service was about 3 months ago. The problems somehow started shortly after that. Apart from that, I haven't noticed anything special. But let's see, maybe your experience will shed some light on the matter. I'll definitely have the camshaft phaser checked. It's really annoying that you can never do all the repairs yourself, the price is really high, isn't it? Thanks in any case for the tips and information!

Hey, no problem, you're welcome! Oh yeah, the mileage and recent service could definitely have something to do with it. Over time, certain parts just wear out, don't they? Yes, the price for these types of repairs can be really hefty. In my case, unfortunately, there was no way to do it myself. The cam phasing is quite a beast and it's best to get a professional in for something like that. But hey, even if it's expensive, at least the car will drive properly again afterwards, right? And when your car is back on the road, that's worth any money, don't you think? So, have the camshaft phaser checked at the garage and let me know what comes out of it. Maybe you can also get an estimate before they start the work, I think that would be helpful. I hope it won't be too expensive. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Person1:FINAL REPLY Hey, you're absolutely right. With repairs like this, sometimes it's better to let the professionals go first, even if it hurts to spend so much money. I'm going to take your advice and go to the garage to have the cam phaser checked. An estimate is definitely a good idea - that way I can prepare myself for the expense. I'll keep you posted as soon as I know more. Thanks again for your advice and support!
