Problems with BMW 3 Series model year 2008: Black smoke, engine indicator light and high fuel consumption - Possible defect in NOx storage catalytic converter

Check engine light on

Exhaust leak

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Loss of engine power

Hello, I have a problem with my petrol BMW 3 Series built in 2008. When accelerating, black smoke comes out of the exhaust, the check engine light is on, there is a lack of engine power, the exhaust is leaking and fuel consumption is high. I think it could be due to the ageing NOx storage catalytic converter. Has anyone had similar experiences and could give me some troubleshooting tips? Would like to know how you fixed it in the workshop. Thanks in advance!

Hello, you, I have moderate car knowledge and had a similar problem with my BMW 5 Series, built in 2010. In my case, the whole thing came down to a defective NOx sensor, which then caused incorrect readings. The whole thing was discovered and fixed at my trusted garage. The repair cost me 665 euros. It's possible that it's also the NOx sensor, but only a workshop can really determine this. What error message is your car displaying exactly? The more information you provide, the better I may be able to help you. All the best!

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. The thing is, the car is actually also showing an error message regarding the NOx sensor. At my last service, at about 210759 km, I was told that it's time to change it. Now I was worried if it would be just as expensive. A friend advised me to try and do it myself, but I'm unsure about that. Do you know how easy or difficult it is to change the NOx sensor yourself? Thanks again! All the best back.

Hello again! Well, the garage did it for me because I don't know my way around that well either. What I do know, however, is that replacing the NOx sensor is not that complicated. The important thing is that you have the right tools and that you work carefully. However, you can also do a lot of things wrong and, in the worst case, damage your car. But, if you have the courage and confidence to do it yourself, then give it a try. But if you're not sure, it's better to have a professional do it. It will cost you money, but you can be sure that it will be done properly. Good luck and let us know how it goes! All the best!

Hey, thanks for the advice! Yes, you're right, I shouldn't risk damaging anything further. I think I'll leave it to a specialist workshop after all. Fortunately, I have a trustworthy workshop nearby where I can get advice. I will definitely let you know how it goes! Thanks again and stay healthy! All the best!

Hi there! It sounds like you might be right about the NOx storage catalytic converter. I had similar issues with my BMW, and for me replacing the converter fixed it. I also checked for any exhaust leaks and faulty sensors. Hope this helps!
